Skoda Superb 3.6 4x4. Experiences....
Discussion
My Leon Cupra Lease deal ends this summer and my mileage is so unpredictable now that I'm not going to go down the route of leasing this time around. I'd also like something much bigger for family camping trips.
My shortlist seems to be:
E61 5-series
Volvo V70 post '07
Skoda Superb Estate (Mk2 I think, 2010 ish)
Musts for me are auto, petrol and biased much more towards comfort than 'sport' though a bit of power is nice.
They all have pros and cons but I cannot help noticing what ridiculously good value the Skoda Superb is but unlike the other two, I know almost nothing about them. There are a few 3.6 v6 4x4 estates knocking around that are about 5-7 years old and around 100k miles for £6-8k. That seems great VFM and I like that they're all very well specced.
What are the worries with these? Tax is high, I can see that. I'll take a bit of thirst on the chin, What about the DSG box and 4x4 system, any worries there? Is the 3.6 engine a strong unit? Electrics?
Is it worth considering any of the smaller petrol engine options?

I don't really see the point in the car, maybe someone can enlighten me? It appears to have very high running costs for a rather average 256bhp? I looked at similar aged Superb's a while back and test drove an estate version with the Golf GTi engine and DSG. It was very quiet and comfortable, but also slow although I would have mapped it anyway, but it had massively cheaper running costs to the v6. Mapped, I doubt there's much difference. In the end, I bought a Mondeo Ecoboost 240, which wasn't quite as big but still vast, it was cheap to run, quiet and comfortable but with 240bhp, still had some performance.

Do they actually do it with the Golf GTi engine? I spotted the 1.8TSi, which I guess can be re-mapped but hadn't seen any 2.0 TSi's. V6 would be nice but it's not a must. But one advantage of the V6 models seems to be that they're all 4x4 and all very well equipped. The one I viewed was a 2.0TSI Superb Estate with DSG, 200bhp iirc although would imagine it'd map to 230-240bhp which would put it at similar performance to the v6 4x4, but with a lot cheaper running costs. When I searched for them for sale though, I couldn't find many. These sort of cars are often for fleet use, so finding higher powered petrol lumps are difficult.
Have a look for 2.0 Mondeo Ecoboosts, as it sounds like they offer you everything you want? The facelift version from 2012 onwards is much nicer inside and comes with 240bhp. The pre-facelift comes with 200bhp but is viturally the same engine and can be mapped to 240bhp with no issues.
Other alternatives, older Volvo V70 T5 or S40 T5 because both offer 5 cylinder character and plenty of comfort for not much money! The S40 T5 is the engine Ford used in the mk2 Focus ST.

This is the car that caught my eye and prompted the thread. I'm not in a postion to buy at present but other that being a bit miley, this sort of thing looks stonking value. I feel there must be a catch!
