2005 Touran / mkv golf heater fan issue

Afternoon all,
Weird thing has developed on the Box - 2005 Touran 2.0TDi.
The heater fan runs fine. If set to 'recirculate' then I get air coming out at the vents. If set to 'external' then no air at the vents. Fan is running and sounds like it is blowing against a blockage.
I've checked under the bonnet and the intake is clear. Pollen filter is clear. Where to check next?
