What's it all about?

Every time I drive past it I wonder why there are fields full of what look like radio masts. Someone here must know - Pistonheads has answers to everything.

AFAIK It is for low frequency communication with submarines, although it looks now as if the site is being demolished gradually as a lot of the aerials have come down over the last 18 months or so.

Some of the aerials are for the international atomic clock IIRC.

my grandad used to work as an engineer for BT and had to go to the top of them.
They were used by the MOD for radio communications during WW2

Subterranea Britannica really is an excellent site. Whilst not being an anorak about it, I've always been fascinated by disused stations, tunnels and so on. It amazes me just how much disused space there is, especially in really built up areas.

Slight diversion OT, but I once had to look at a disused mine for a client who was looking for storage space. It was near Bath and had been used for ammunition storage during WWII. Not only was it very deep underground but it also went on for miles and miles. There were lots of beautifully cut out galleries that had each been used for a different type of ammo. Big hole had that one ever gone off!

Does anyone have any ino on the old Sea Depot in Yate (christ knows why the chose it as its miles from the sea, although it used to be on the main railway line). Remember seeing huge anchors and chains lined up there when I was a kid and the sheds were full of green godesses.
