Joe Bonamassa - Bournemouth - Saturday just gone - 11!

I was definitely "late to the party" with Bonamassa and don't really know very much of his back catalogue. Seen a few Youtube videos, and liked those (and like the way he comes over as a proper guitar-nut in his interviews and other clips) so thought I'd grab the chance to see him this past weekend at the BIC as it's just down the road.

Expecting mainly bluesy noodling with maybe a few rockier numbers thrown in I'll be honest and say I wasn't expecting a particularly special gig... I mean, a guy wearing a suit? He's not going to be rocking out all night, is he? I was so wrong!

He and his superb band (I last saw Reese Wynans when he was playing with SRV back in the day... a treat to see him still going strong) smashed it out the park for me; it was high energy rock'n'blues all the way. Storming versions of songs I knew, and quite a few I didn't.

A highlight was hearing him work with the tones of the various guitars he used. Many guitarists have their own tone and either EQ or play everything to sound similar... but he and his sound crew clearly work to bring out the characters of the guitars, and let them sing in the mix, and I loved that.

Yeah, this one went to 11.

Usually try to get to see him at least once a year been going for about 12 yrs now so seen quite a few line ups but i really like the band hes got together now ,joes singings come along from when i first saw him . Can recommend joanne shaw taylor , devon allman ,and kris barras
All bluesy type artists .

Yeah, I thought they were great; really tight and punchy and clearly all great musicians individually too. And most important of all, obviously enjoying themselves too.

Would go but his ticket prices are too steep.

At Bournemouth I noted a lot of tickets for sale still on the day of the concernt but I spose they make enough selling the tickets at a higher price.

Seen him a few times over the years, but don't bother now he's moved to arenas as that's all he seems to play up here.IMO his brand of blues needs a bit of intimacy and decent acoustics and he's not arena material anyway. He's very good playing covers, but only some of his self-penned stuff is OK.
