Visiting the UK : Car rental?

Any US based folks here been to England recently and hired a car? Looking for recommendations on getting a reasonable deal for a weeks rental.
Nothing fancy, VW Golf size, maybe a bit smaller is fine. Its only for me.

I visited UK around this time last year.

I booked my rental car via www.rentalcars.com I collected it from Europcar at Gatwick on Oct 3rd and returned it on Oct 9th. Total cost was $125.38 (my credit card covered the add-on CDW insurance), so dirt-cheap in my opinion. It was booked as a Vauxhall Astra or similar - and ended-up being a Vauxhall Meriva (which I'd never heard of!)

I booked my flights as separate legs, CHS to JFK, then JFK to LHR and saved around $300 I reckon over a single booking. Even managed to get decent connections. Flying BA and noticed they offer Economy BASIC now. Talk about penny pinching.
