I've been thinkin' for a couple of yrs now about using an ex single seater race car on the road, ie formula ford type thing but pref with a bike engine and then kick supercar ass on track days.. Coz as much as i love Aerial Atoms, or bike engines caterfields etc or idealy the light car company Rocket but they are a bit out of budget, (Especially the Rocket!) as im talking a few grand. I have used a race bike on the road and basically you need to do sod all to get an MOT. For example imagine a fully striped race bike and all you need for an MOT is- road legal tyres, an exhaust with a BS stamp on it (i just engraved my illegal race one!) a working horn and speedo to note the milage from (it doesnt have to work!) and i think a brake light but im not sure on tht one. No lights or anything else and as long as it had a V5 before it went racing the SVA dont need to get involved.

Ive had racers on the road but all ex road cars so they had lights etc, so would I have to go the full SVA route to put a Formula Ford type car on the road ie headlight heights drive by noise tests etc etc??

Your ideas very welcome as im dead intersted in that track car for sale in the classifieds..

You would have to go through the whole SVA I think. Probably take a fair bit to get compliant.

I remember seeing a thing on TV about a lad in Japan who had converted a Formula 3 car for road use. Looked crazy driving along the road in traffic, but as their rules are stricter than ours it obviously can be done at a price.

take a look at this Iguana, www.singleseaterracingcar.co.uk/english/index.htm

I've had the same thought. You would have to choose something like a older Formula Ford, or F3 the modern ones would have a problem with ride height. Yes it would have to go through the SVA main problems would be protrosion (sp?) laws ie evrything must rounded.

I was recently very impressed with the Dax rush with bike engine, that also was a race car for the road.

Not sure about costs or where to go to find out more but the only single seater I know that runs a bike engine is the Jedi www.meggapics.com/jedi/jedi%20p1a.htm

There were closed wheel single seat racers at Silverstone a while back (this summer) running Blackbird (?) engines, chain driven..

Can't remember what they were.. or the date - ask JonRB - it was his wedding day (at Silverstone) so he should know when it was

I like it mind you I'm a GPL fan so a real road going one would be such a giggle. I have no idea how much that car costs though (could be £). Although some racers are as low as £2k don't forget you're going to need quite a bit of work to get it road legal. The lights would be the easy bit, as I said before making the car "safe" and especially the emmisions/exhaust system needs some serious thinking.

you would find it much easier putting something like a global gt light through an SVA or even an old sports 2000. there would be too many problems with a single seater but i remember one for sale in autosport a few years back based on a Van Dieman RF88. it was a bit of a DIY effort but had the MoT and documents to prove it was legal. lets face it, if you can have a motorised bed/shed onthe road (something on top gear a while back) then an old racer should be fairly easy!
