Only way I have heard that you can do it is to call the DVLA and tell them that someone has abandonded a car on your property and you want to trace the owner.

Dont know if this still works though.

Matt.

Yes, try this;

Go up to the car that required number plate is on and ask him/her who she is.

Easy

A few years back you could write to the DVLA they would send a form, you pay £5 fill in form and the info would come back. I think you had to say it was because of a possible claim against that car.

Try asking Madcop - might be able to help but then again he might not DATA Protection and all that.

What do you want to know about the reg? The person who owns it, or if it's in use? The DVLA will tell you the history about the reg, at a price. But an insurance website will tell you what kind of car and details of the engine size, etc... but not the owner.

Ohh get you!

I am sure a plate "FI35 TA" would only cost about a tenner! *slap*

If you're looking to see if a cherished plate you want to buy (but can't see for sale anywhere) was ever issued you can try www.newreg.co.uk/frames/on/issued/

Or, as has been said, you can try doing an insurance quote for it and it will tell you the details of the car.

As for tracing the owner, more difficult. And you won't get a Police Officer to help you as there are very severe penalties for misuse of the Police National Computer. Like instant dismissal, I believe.

NOTE: Layman's opinion. Subject to clarification by serving Police Officer. Your mileage may vary. This information is worth what you paid for it)

That's a good site! I've requested a new one already.

Before you buy (probably too late!) always check that the numberplate isn't an unissued one by checking at www.dvla-som.co.uk/ first as many of these numberplate people, including NewReg, will simply act as a middleman between you and DVLA. And why do that when you can cut out the middleman and buy direct from DVLA?

I want "3837 XJ" because it was my father's first registration number when he got his Anglia. When I replace the fiesta it will be with something (hopefully) a little more desirable and I thought having the registration would be a nice personal touch.
