Is there a reason VW Crafters are so much cheaper and present themselves as much better value for money than transporters?

I am looking to buy an LWB T4 / T5 to turn into a camper (starting with a van/caravelle/shuttle) and couldnt help but notice the bigger Crafter appearing in my searches.

A MWB high top Crafter looks like so much better of a proposition for camper conversions, am i missing something which makes them a daft choice?

I think it's about daily usability, and getting into car parks.

The Transporter will go under the car park barriers, fit into a parking space better, more economical etc..

But a T5 isn't big enough for a proper loo where as a Crafter would be. Much more spacious.

I suppose it boils down to how you're going to use it.

That is a fair point, didnt think about the height specifically. Parking spaces, not so fussed as long as it fits on our drive with the other cars which is why i ruled out a LWB crafter as lovely as the space would be.

Main use will be for me, Mrs JoeFraser and the mutt to get away for weekends locally and have longer summer breaks away in europe.

A T4 / 5 Pop top in LWB was what i was initially looking for, but anything decent carries such a premium even for older and more ratty looking vans and in that spec they are a bit harder to find.

I have no where near California funds!

Looking for 10-15k purchase and then another 5 or so to get the conversion most the way there.

It wasn’t meant like that more that VW have just realised the sense of the crafter!

You definitely pay a surcharge to drive a Transporter, VW rip you off and then there's the 'scene' tax and all that.

I last drove a Crafter about 7 or 8 years ago, it drove like a tank, but yes plenty of space.

The new Crafter looks like it's really caught up with it's smaller brother in terms of refinement and equipment, but they still ain't cheap.

I would think it is a size thing a crafter, and it's Mercedes Sprinter sibling, is much bigger than a t4 or 5.
