2007 A4 2.0 TDI cranks but takes ages to start
Discussion
Hi everyone ,
looking for a vag expert ( sounds so wrong!)
we have a lovely condition 2007 A4 convertible with 2.0 TDi BPW engine code .
It has done 130k miles but has a service history and was owned for the last 8 years by my son who had few issues with it but it had a cam and injectors done when he bought it probably 60k ago.
Just before we went away in it it had a aircon compressor as the old one had stopped working .
we noticed it was not running smoothly as at idle there was a definite "wobble" you felt sitting in the car so it went back to the garage and had an alternator replaced as there was some bearing noise.
It did not cure it but there were no fault codes stored but cam wear on no 3 injector lobe was reported and the injector was operating at the limit of its self correction so we were advised to book it in when we got back for a cam change no problem things wear out.
we then found that the engine was proving troublesome to start.
it would crank over but not fire for 30 seconds or so.
second time of 30 sec it would catch and fire and then run with plenty of power and no issues apart from the "wobble"
When we got back it went in and had the cam done and the error correction is now not showing on number 3 injector and it has lost the "wobble"
but is still a pig to start.
previously it started within 10 seconds of cranking first time.
I understand the injectors fire when 250rpm is detected on turnover but the engine spins over really well.
the glow plug light comes on and goes off normally before attempting a start and in 20+ degrees surely the plugs themselves wouldn't make too much difference .
Battery is not old is good and spins over very fast not sluggish at all.
fuel filter has been changed after we got back as a precaution.
diesel is definitely getting through from lift pump in tank
Tank fuel level makes no difference neither does nose up or down(slope)
All injectors have been reseated with new washer seals.
while I was away at the outlaws in France and after 650 miles I found the oil was contaminated with diesel and was high, probably due to the amount of fuel coming past the rings when cranking before it fires or the misfire ? So I changed the oil and filter using the correct oil and a Mann Filter.
since then it does not appear to have risen and remains clean and good consistency.
we only have 1 key for it but the lights go out as they should on starting so we think it recognises the code.
Garage is my sons and has a great reputation but they are starting to run out of ideas!
No sign of leaks on tandem pump
so where to now ?
read something about a problem with the light switch?
any thoughts or suggestions welcome
