Big music sets question

Having just been to Reading festival at the weekend and being a regular festival goer and the wife goes to a fair few gigs; big and small, it got me thinking about the sets, particularly the larger ones.
How does an artist or the director or whoever plans and directs the display, lights, pyrotechnics videos etc, know that it's all going to work as planned, it's not as if a main stage can be set up in the back garden of the headliners to see if it works and it's not like a film which you can re-shoot bits that don't work?
I guess there are issues and problems with some bits maybe not working as planned but from the perspective of being in the crowd, the artists put in a bloody good display of lighting, fireworks, ticker tape etc which all seems to work and happen with the beat of the music with no hiccups.
Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on how it all seemlessly comes together and seems to work.

Production rehearsals do happen, there are places big enough to accommodate everything.

Production rehearsals, sound, light and Video take place in all sorts of lovely large buildings.
They are out there including arena sized venues, check production park.
Big shows are choreographed and have all sorts of directors working on them.
LD’s and sound will have rehearsed with the directors and band all the cues for each song. Many LD’s can literally programme the desk and automate the show the same for noise boys, With little input required.
I used to work for the art directors of amongst other big acts Massive Attack. We designed and programmed a ‘box’ that visualused all the lighting and real-time video you see on stage prior to running it live. This box was then used live on the show midi triggering all the dmx and video by the drummer and took cues by midi. All in sync, every night!

I recall some coverage of rehearsals in the recent Genesis reunion documentary that was on the TV a few years back, practising the video and lighting and so on. If I remember it right, there was some frustration that the guy making sure that various changes happened at the right time didn't know any of their music, so it didn't work as well as it should have.
I'm sure there was another interesting thread on this or a similar subject not long ago, but I couldn't find it. Maybe it was the mixing desk thread that I'm mixing it up with (sorry).
