Well as the title says where can I find videos of old races? AND by old I'm looking for late 80's and early 90's. I see some VHS tapes with highlights of the series, but I'd be interested in getting hold of full races not just a season in 90 minutes if that's even possible?! Anyone ever managed to do this? Any pointers would be well received!

My friend just sent me a 1.3tb copy of an the tagged from the mid 80s to 2015, I can't imagine why someone who hates cats would have downloaded that - he's just playing with his new fibre line.

The ownership of all F1 footage post the 1980 season rests with FOCA (or its succecssors such as Formula One Management - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_Group) so they are the ones who control its availability. Every year from 1981 on they put together a season's highlights tape (VHS) and these are now available on DVD.

Full length races are fairly rare but many copies were made by TV companies or by individuals using domestic recorders - which became generally avail;able from around 1979/80.

For periods before 1981, the "ownership" of footage usually rests with which host TV channel which broadcast the race originally. I find these more interesting to be honest and the great thing about You Tube is that we are seeing more and more original TV footage emerging as collections get posted up. The downside is that some of this footage will be from non English speaking countries or may have no commentary at all (not always a bad thing). Also, pre 1967, European TV was black and white only and it took a number of years for colour to become the norm.

A search of Reddit may help.

Amazon?

They are fairly easy to obtain.

I presume you meant VHS rather than BHS smile

You Tube is pretty good for the older stuff which is not controlled by Formula One Management.

Sky F1 shows classic races with a mixture of highlights or full race.

Over the next week they are showing:

Belgium 98 - full race
Italy 88 - highlights
Italy 93 highlights
Italy 95 highlights
Italy 08 - full race

Anything they show from 2000 on is generally the full race. Before that it's more likely to be highlights.

EDIT: I have full copies of all races from 1978 onward

All of the early stuff was converted from VHS tape to digital and some of the quality is pretty poor with some foreign or no commentary, if you are after anything in particular drop me a PM.

I got rid of all my F1 race videos. All I have left is this box set of F1 from the very early days up to 1992. Also I have on tape the BBC series "Inside McLaren" following the team during the 1992 season.

There yours if you want them.

If Mark doesn't want them could I have them? I'm always after old F1 VHS I can transfer to digital.

If you're on Facebook, join this group and then go in the video section.

Me and another member put on all the full races from 1989-2002.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2025722957658349/

Alternatively this guy on Dailymotion seems to have a fair few full races (amongst other series too)

https://www.dailymotion.com/johann-alboretto/video...

I have 1989-99 on my laptop at the minute but I won't divulge exactly how beyond if you happen to type in 'F1 1978 to 2015' into Google and go from there...

There are also plenty of full races on Youtube with English commentary as well, some of them cover for the occasional foreign language ones that I have on my hard drive. Certainly some of the 1990's races that I've got favourited/saved.

F1.tv is slowly (and I mean, very slowly) adding more full races in addition to highlights packagaes month by month so for the money they're charging it's worth subscribing. Just a shame we can't get the full package in the UK due to existing contracts with Sky/Channel 4 when it concerns the most recent or live races in a current season.

Hi I know this post is a few years old now but only recently came across this, I was wondering if you are still interested in VHS F1.. I have full race recordings from the 80's-90's, all from live BBC/ itv broadcasts.
Im a huge F1 fan (even named after Niki Lauda)
Lots of F1 history on these tapes, some unforgettable races and some we wish to forget 😢

Please be VERY careful about posting links publicly guys, some people have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to upload old races for us to enjoy while staying clear of the FOM police, if you post a link here all that work is undone.,

PM it for sure, but be careful about posting links, it will just be closed if you do.

This resurrected old thread reminds me. I parcelled up those videos ( see my post ) and sent them off to hodge4ever, I’m still waiting for the DVD’s and a “drink” he promised me.🤬🤬
