Ok, so ‘Mob’ may not be the best term to use here, but you get the idea :-)
Who’s on PH and lives in Italy year round? Where are you, too?
My trouble ‘n’ strife and I are on a property recce soon and are weighing up the various regions. We’re not going too far down south...too damn hot!

Pretty much. Been here a year solid now and despite learning the lingo and getting involved in local life, it’s just not hitting the sweet spot.
Out of the last three years we’ve spent over 18 months in various departments, yet none have inspired us to set down roots permanently.
So, Italy, what have you?! :-D

I spend six months of the year at my house by Lake Maggiore. I'd spend more but I have better things to do with my life (until I retire) than become a resident with all the tax forms etc.
I've lived in France and would not repeat the experience. Yes, Italy has its frustrations - there is absolutely no notion of customer service in the big firms or state bodies but the small shops, cafes and restaurants are a delight with people who really care about what they are doing. I find the people plain-dealing and straightforward. The people here like doing business with the Brits because they are reputed to pay their bills on time and without quibble...
Up here in Piedmont, dealing with officialdom is not too bad and is positively Teutonic by Italian standards. It took me half an hour to get my codice fiscale and about an hour to open a bank account.
Although the weather is much more pleasant, living in the North of Italy is not in my experience any cheaper than living in the South East of England.

EDIT - oh, Malpensa Airport is only 40 miles away, and I can, if I time it properly, get by train from Stresa station to St Pancras in 12 hours or drive to the Tunnel in around 13. Go much further south and a day's drive is pretty much out of the question. (Although I tend to overnight on the journey home by car because it is more civilised.)
