I’ve got a Passat GTE and I’m trying to get my old classic iPod to connect but it’s not having it. It only has a USB port but the screen says some like “device not recognised”. The iPod charges and the VW logo appears but no music.

Is it completely unsupported or does anyone know if it can work?

Thanks

I've got a 2016 Golf and have the same issue (USB device not supported, or similar). I've got two phones (android and my work iPhone). The android phone works fine and so does android auto. The iPhone (and an old iPod Touch) give the message above.

VW have traced it to the USB socket not being the Apple compatible one. They can retro-fit it for £141.

I wouldn’t pay vw to do it- it’s literally a module that plugs into the back of the USB unit and only costs about 70 quid.

If your car does not have it I suspect it’s not uk spec as all uk spec cars should have it.

Thanks Guys. My iphone works fine through the USB, both through media & car play so i dont think its a problem with the USB not being apple compatible. I was wondering if it is the age of ipod etc.

the ipod worked in my mk7 golf (63reg) but not the 2017 passat

Is your ipod cable the original or an Apple approved one (ie. does it have an apple chip in it)?

Often this can cause issues too.

I'd also suggest trying a new genuine cable.

My 16-plate Golf GTD works perfectly with my iPod Classic, even showing album art. I'm not familair with the system in the Passat but I'm guessing that there's no reason why your Passat shouldn't do the same.

1). Get the iPod connected to iTunes and make sure that the firmware is the latest version. It hasn't been updated for years but still important to have the latest version of the firmware installed.
2). Use a genuine Apple cable.

Hope this helps.

It is a genuine cable. I'll plug the ipod into the laptop and see if it needs updating.

As said earlier, it also worked perfectly in my mk7 GTD through the USB with the same cable. Both that and the Passat have Discover Pro so almost the same. The unit in the glove box of the golf had the port for an MDI and the passat doesnt. Thats the only difference i can see

Does the Passat have 1, 2 or 3 USB ports? The situation is different depending on this. And did you try the iPhone on the same port as the iPod?

If the car has one port, does it have a 'cut' in the flat centre of the USB port? If so, it has an Apple chip.

It’s only got one USB port, it’s in the centre console under the arm rest. That’s the port that the iPhone works with but not the iPod.

Very strange.

To confirm

Is this "gap" is present, it is Apple compatible. If that is the case, it will be the iPod itself.

Thanks NAS. The USB port does have that chip. I've just updated the ipod, used a second cable and it still says its not supported. Must be that old ipods arent compatible. Worked in my mk7 gtd, works in my mrs' 16 reg Audi through the MDI too. Gutted, end of an era
