I wonder if anyone can help? I am new to this and its my first post...

I have owned my 58 plate discover 3 td6 automatic for 10 weeks. 140,000 on the clock.

When I’ve towed with the vehicle usually an hour or so into the journey I had a Transmission Failure, limited gears available error. When I stop and start the car the error goes off. The only time I have the error is when I’m towing (it’s happened on more than one occasion).

I have it booked into the local dealership on Friday but on calling them today, they’ve advised it could be one of two things.

Transition fluid and filter change (double flush approx £500) or it needs a new gear box (approx £3-4000). But they won’t be able to tell if it’s the gear box until they do the fluid change.

I have also noticed over the last week or so that the Rev counter jumps up and down. Which I managed to capture today on video. What I don’t know is if this is the box slipping or if it’s where it needs to change gear but I’m not quite fast enough (if that makes sense). I floor it at the end to show when it changes up a gear. (unfortunately I can not post this to show you).

I have no idea what this is just looking for any advice or recommendations...

I’m gutted as it’s my first discovery and having only owned it 10 weeks and it may need a new gear box is so frustrating let alone finding £4000 for it!! Any advice welcome thanks for reading.

Located in Harlow, Essex any local recommendations on Garages would be excellent.

Did you buy it from a trader or private seller?

I'm sure others will be along shortly to advise you better, but I think that's one for the "not how it works" category, assuming you weren't told it was cheap because of impending gearbox borkage or similar.

If you're spending your own money, though, I wouldn't go to a main dealer, I'd find an independent or a gearbox specialist. £500 sounds high for a fluid change.

Because that's when it gets hottest, because it's working hardest.

How much weight are you towing?

Seems fair.

What's the box fluid change interval on these? Is it "sealed for life"...? <spit> What does the SH say about any fluid changes?

10yo, 140k vehicle being used for probably harder use than it's ever been before? Yeh, good luck with that...

Thanks Dave. No I wasn't told it was cheap and I have also been advised to speak with Citizens Advice, as apparently its to do with Consumer rights and it not being fit for purpose. So I will look into that too as I did speak with the dealer yesterday and he was helpful but advised no warranty. There is no way he would have know it would be an issue as he doesn't tow or checked it, but I do feel a little concerned as it sounds like from another post it needs a Megaflush fluid change and torque converter placement as a minimum. So looking to be approx £1-1.5k!

Thank you though.

Approx 3ton, maybe once a month in the summer. Limited over the winter.

4years or 40,000. I can't see any SH with a change on it.

I've been advised this by a few companies, that as I bought as a towing vehicle I should be speaking with him. But I see your point.

Thank you for your help.

I'm not a fan of people leaning on traders with "muh rights" over nonsense, but as long as he's not actively abusing the thing, 10 weeks to a major mechanical component having a sulk isn't really reasonable.

I agree with you Dave, just only had it 10 weeks and done less than 1500 miles and this has happened. The first time it happened was actually about 6 weeks after owning it, the first time I towed but as it went off when I stopped and started the car, I just assumed it was an electrical issue and had resolved itself. It was only because it did it the second time towing I realised it was a related issue.

I absolutely do not want to take the p*ss out of the dealer, but feel its something which was an issue previously.

Anyway the important thing is getting it fixed!! And hoping it does not cost the earth! I've asked my boss for a pay rise too haha (he put me on to this forum) so hopefully he will see this... Feel free to back me on it!! I'm a disco owner now, I need all the pennies I can get!! LMAO.
