Our dear old A4 is about to fail its MOT on an amber engine warning light for manifold actuator fault. It also has an overboost fault resulting in intermittent LIMPing.

I guess it's probably reached the end of its life, as the cost of fixing it is prohibitive. It has done 186K miles.

Full leather, sat nav, bose, cd changer etc

Such a shame.

  • sigh*
Does anyone have any advice on the best way to 'dispose' of it, hopefully getting a bit of cash in return?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

MOT till end of August.

If the EML is due to a P2015 or P2020 error, these can be fixed with these brackets for £75

https://www.dpfsolutionsheffield.co.uk/product/p20...

Recently used them on a Q7 3.0 TDI with a P2020 error, or if your handy with the spanners, the motors can be fixed directly for pennies

Thanks, wish I'd known about that wee bracket when we had the first go at fixing the manifold prob. An independent replaced a bit (possibly the actuator arm?) with a part from a diffrent engine (does this make sense?). All good for a few months then the fault came back.

I put these brackets on my 07 3.0 and the fault code still came back

Yep, it's not just the linkage arm that wears - the bushes on the shafts also go. You can get exchange refurbished units on the bay - the whole plastic "plenum" type assembly with the motor/shaft; basically plug&play. From memory these were a couple of hundred quid for the pair and sorted the problem on mine (58 plate 3.0 tdi).

These are the VAG swirl flap parts, if your still getting the error with the bracket fitted, I would expect you have either an electrical issue, of the flaps are caked up causing them not to open/close correctly.

Easiest way to test, is to push/pull on the actuator arm to ensure it travels freely, otherwise, is the error on remains only bank 2, you need to adjust the grub screw to remove the fault. As I believe the brackets compensate for the worn bushes, and ensure the motor operate within the required range/tolerances.

Yup, that's me. Hello!

...and yes, doesn't sound too bad to nurse some life back into that and a rebuilt manifold is a good starting point.

The "repair" bracket strikes me as a poor idea.

The actual fault is wear and tear in the droplink, the little bellcrank and bushes it runs in, and the spindle bushes. If you're happy to spend a little time on the job, both manifolds can be rebuilt properly for £80 of parts. Feeling lazy? Pair of complete manifolds can be had for £150ish and fitted in a leisurely couple of hours.

The motors are almost never at fault.

£70 on a bracket to stop the arm moving too much but not actually fixing anything? Seems like poor value.

I think £70 is a bargain if your not handy with the spanners, I was quoted over £1k by 2 audi specialists to replace the manifolds, which I found excessive.

If your handy with the spanners, then £70 is excessive, but for a solution that can be installed in 3 minutes with minimal dismattleing, especially if you dealing with a potential MOT failure.
