new VCR set up problems...

My Mother has just bought a new VCR ( a JVC ) however when set up with her telly ( Toshiba ) it behaves strangely.
You can get BBC1,2,ITV, C4, C5 through the telly ok if the VCR is in standby. But if the VCR is switched on then ITV diappears from the telly, i.e. not being watched through the video channel, but on the normal TV channel. Any ideas ?.

Sounds like the VCR output signal is near to or the same as the ITV signal, hence the interference.
Look on the back of the VCR there should be a screw adjuster near the aerial output. This will enable you to retune the output of the VCR away from the ITV signal, thus curing the problem.
You will need to retune the TV into the VCR after doing this,

I still own one of these archaic machines, so I'll try and answer.
VCRs are set to output on a particular RF channel. Your mother's VCR is most probably set to output on the same channel as ITV uses in your area. You can normally retune the VCR to choose a different RF channel from the front panel or menu system. Once you've done this you will need to re-tune the TV into the video.

Got a similar problem. Well sort of...
Mum's vcr cannot tune into any channels but the ariel is being routed through the vcr into the TV which can get all the channels no problem. There is a scart connection too if that makes any difference.
This is the second VCR it's happened with too. Any ideas?

Still worth a whirl to tweak the RF output of the VCR. Power up the VCR and tune the TV to ITV, then tweak the VCR adjuster & see if it improves...

To me that suggests you have the tele selected on a/v input and thus you'd only be able to see what the VCR is tuned to.
The normal way is AE into VCR, looped through to TV. Tune TV to VCR frequency on say Chan 6 or connect via Scart Lead and select A/v input and tune the TV to receive the terresrial programmes on 1 - 5. Now the tele should view channels via its Own selector regardless of what the VCR channel is selected to.
The chan 6 will take a video RF signal from the VCR whilst the A/V input will take RGB Video o/p from the VCR only - A/V input is preferable as it gives the better quality o/p for video tape.
