a little while ago i went past a small shoebox shaped metal box, on a tripod at about just below waist height, it was hidden between a car and a truck in a layby on a long straight bit of road. I was overtaking at the time, it was facing in the direction that i was travelling. After much searching of the net i cant see any matches, mini-gatsos apparently tend to be lower to the ground and are manned or you get stopped further down the road - neither was true in this case.

Im thinking it might have been a DVLA thing to check peoples car tax?

anyone here recognise the device?

cheers!

Dave

An old microwave? People chuck allsorts away in laybys... Or perhaps it could've been a shoebox full of porn, I always used to find grot mags on laybys when I was a wee lad.

Or perhaps it was one of these? www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=17486&f=23&h=0

Lost me bookmarks, but there was a site (maybe on pistonheads links) that listed a camera that works on piezo strips in the road. Plod plugs and goes, then comes back to collect data?
2 week wait then?

Cheers guys.

Just looked at that emissions tester thing - could be one of them, im just downloading a video of it now.

Just downloaded the vid - i didnt see any of those little boxes near to teh ground, so maybe it wasnt one of them.

As for 2 week wait, well i havent received anything yet but then as stated in my other thread (named DVLA?) ive not received my V5 yet from when i bought the car months and months ago so maybe theyve not got all my details correctly.

The annoying thing is that i was only overtaking as the car behind was hassling me (flashing his lights and getting arsey) and when i went to overtake (on a loooong straight stretch of road) the car in front accelerated - forcing me to either hit the brakes and attempt to rejoin the line of traffic, or speed up - i sped up as i felt it safer, and then noticed a box in a layby.

Ah well, such is life i suppose!

Thanks for your help tho guys...

Just looking at that site again, and what i saw on a tripod looked just like the rectangular box to the bottom left in this pic:

and in this pic i THINK i can see something on a tripod behind the people

but in the video it would appear that the rectangular box sits low to the road, so im unsure. Assumably the other bits sit on the other side of the road, i could have missed them i suppose!

Ive just emailed the people behind those emissions sensors, so we'll see!

"Hi,

Just a curiosity based query here - on the 31st August this year, i saw a gadget by the side of the A36 near Codford in Wiltshire (closest large town Warminster) and ever since ive been intrigued as to what it was. I went back a short while later and found the car and gadget had left. Ive just found your website by chance and your Emissions tester looks familiar to what i saw, except that the Processor Unit (or the thing i saw that looked similar) was on a tripod behind the open boot of the car. Were you emissions testing on that particular day? I saw it at approximately 10:30 if i recall correctly.

Thank you for your time.

Regards

David."
