Hi

Bit of an odd one and I wondered if any ideas. There is an intermittent clunking/knocking sound when driving the Defender, it seems to happen fairly randomly but maybe when going over a bump and steering left or right brings it on more often. It really sounds like it is inside the car, I checked the jack wasn't sliding around, and also moved the wheel brace from the battery compartment in case that was the culprit, but to no avail.

It is definitely from the passenger side and passengers have mentioned that they can feel a slight knock through the seat or footwell. It does the same clunking regardless of how many people are in the car. It is a 06 td5 90xs six seater and has only done 27k miles.

It is a dullish clunk not a rattle, as if something is knocking or perhaps flexing/moving.

Any thoughts appreciated!

I had similar and it was shot universal joints on the drive shaft.

Yes they are outside, but the noise comes up through the floor.

If it is that, they are an easy fix.

Another favourite is the 'A' frame ball joint, although that usually manifests as a clunk when pulling away from a standing start or braking.
Item 12 in this link, fits into the carrier - item 16 - and its pin connects to the rear axle. Use a long lever between frame & axle & lever apart. Should be no movement. When gone there's usually a lot!
