Mobile Phones - American Chopper.

What type of phones do they use on there? They look like normal clamshell style mobiles but they use them like walkie talkies but the conversations have lots of lag and sounds like they are via satellite to Australia and back, or the Moon.

Walkie Talkie phone are very common over here.

I think they are Push To Talk phones. Basically use packet radio over GPRS between a group of handsets.

Hmmmm, don't like them at all. Bit of a technology downgrade in terms of the lag.

Watching one of the latest episodes last night and Paul Snr was using a motorola flip phone, definately over "push to talk" network usage.

Paul Jnr had the same phone on the table next to him.

I have one of those fisher price rubber nokia phones that can use 'ptt'.
Quite handy if someone else has one, but bloody useless if you want a rapid conversation....well, a two sided one.

There's a fair bit of lag on mobile phones anyway, but you don't normally notice it too much because you're only at one end, Though sometimes the person on the other end is using some hands-free kit on which the microphone picks up the speaker, and you hear your own voice coming back to you after a significant delay, which is really off-putting.
