Audi TTS what I need to know
Discussion
Hi all
Haven’t been on piston heads for sometime
I’m thinking about getting myself a Audi TTS 2009-2012 ish. Is there anything I need to look out for as way of problems or things to avoid. I was talking to a VAG specialist today who said just avoid the DSG gear boxes. I currently have a DSG on my A3 sportback and have had no issues with it.
If you own or have owned one. What are the like to live with. I only really use my car for going to the gym, food shops and odd days out so I wouldn’t be commuting in it or anything like that.
Thanks for any input

Had one for 6 years and the only thing that ever went wrong with it was both rear shocks needed replacing. Not usually a big deal but magnetic dampers meant that the cost for parts and labour came to almost a grand.
The car was 5 years old at the time and out of warranty but the dealer at least fitted them free of charge as they felt that they should not have failed in such a short time. Audi did not want to know.

I went with my son to pick up a 2009 manual last week.
All I can say is that despite my preconceptions about the TT the 200 mile drive home was a revelation. The performance even in 6th gear was much better than I expected, the handling and traction was excellent, and it was a very comfortable cruiser.
His has done 49k miles and it felt very tight, no squeaks or rattles, loved the interior, and have become an instant fan and I am an OAP
The only things we were told to be 100% on was the cambelt change and the haldex service at the appropriate mileage.
And I think it looks good as well

I had a 2011 Audi TTS, went from a S4 to it.
Great cars, to be honest I did have what seemed like a bit of slippage on my DSG box but not very often.
Easy to drive, nice delivery of power and the magnetic drive is good too.
I think spec is everything with these so try to get one with as much on it as possible.
I actually just upgraded to the mk3 TTS yesterday.

Sold mine a couple of months ago after 6 years of ownership.
The DSG is one of the more reliable variants (6 speed wet clutch) so it's a good option, just make sure it's been serviced on time every 40k miles.
Window regulators fail. Happened on mine, Audi often replace FOC.
PCV valve went on mine (slight squeak coming off boost when warm) but it's a £30 or so part and a very easy job to replace.
Mine was a convertible so I had a couple of roof flap motor issues.
Also had a slight leak from the RH rear driveshaft seal at one point. I've recently seen this on another one as well. Not a big issue but potentially fairly common.
Cambelt every 5 years / 60k or so.
Haldex every 4 years / 40k.
Overall a very good car. Not exactly thrilling handling but perfect as a daily driver that's also fun when required. Very quick in "real" driving due to turbo and 4wd (and DSG) so coming out of roundabouts etc you can use all the power straight away.

What is haldex?
It controls the amount of drive being transferred to the rear wheels. https://youtu.be/tnHPVbSF0cs
I had a 2009 TTS bought at about a year old and kept for 2 years.
In hindsight I should have taken my own advice when viewing and becoming suspicious of the rear tyres being down at 3mm after 9k miles. I got new tyres as part of the deal
6 months later the head gasket blew - warranty item - then just out of warranty the clutch started slipping. £1k to change and nothing obviously wrong with it.
My advice is to budget for a clutch change and hope its not been thrashed excessively.
