Exhaust Noise levels

Anybody know what the max dB for a car exhaust is, how (was revs) tested at, how many metres away. A friends just bought a new exhaust (I'll not call it a silencer, cos it doesn't) and would be interested to know.

It varies considerably between venues... expect 98dB at 1 metre at something like 3/4 rev limit at somewhere like Goodwood, but you can also find places where 103dB or even 107dB are acceptable.

There's always the option of having an insert for the tail pipe for use on trackdays, allowing you to induce coronary failure in the elderly on the streets whilst still quietening it down for the track
