Sorry to be a bore but after loading xp onto my pc today i have seemed to loose com port 4 which my modem is connected to,as u can see i am online but this when i start up in Win 98 where it still recognises my com port 4.

I thought this info would just be moved straight over to xp when i loaded it in but alas not.

TIA

I had problems as I use a broadband connection and XP home edition looks for a phone line. My ISP resolved the problem in seconds.

I have managed to find XP/2000 drivers for 95% of my kit, some fixes were not immediately obvious.

So far it is proving to be far more stable than W98, time will tell!

Is your modem a proper hardware modem or a win-modem (i.e. a software modem). If it is the former then windows should have a least detected the port if not the modem. If it is the latter then windows will not see it until it has proper drivers.

I am guessing if you do not see the com port or modem then it is a win-modem. So you probably need the proper xp drivers for it to work as the previous 98 are not compatible and xp seems to not have the right drivers as standard.

If it is not a win-modem then check your bios settings to see if this recognises the pci modem card. Try setting the com ports to the standard settings rather than plug-and-play if not already configured this way. See if xp then sees the port.

Hope that this helps.
