New VW Tiguan. Stop/Start not working properly. Dangerous?
Discussion
Stop/start function on new Tiguan is behaving erratically. On a couple of occasions, when the foot brake is applied the car stops, but will not start again when foot is lifted off the brake. Brake goes hard and will not depress. Engine has to be switched off and on again for car to move. Has anyone else had a similar fault with their Tiguan, or other VW vehicle? Thanks.

Stop start restarts on application of throttle not applying the brakes - well it works that way on all Volkswagen Group cars I have driven
Audi B8 S4 with DSG certainly restarts when you lift off brake. The downside is the Hill-Hold Assist function is pointless, as the car restarts but doesn't move when you lift off the brake. Maybe the HHA or whatever VW call it changes the behaviour? Check that's switched off, perhaps.
It's probably best to turn off stop/start for now until you get this looked at. As said above, if its an auto(DSG) the engine should restart as soon as you ease off pressure on the brake pedal.
Also, take a look at the stop / start system status on the infotainment screen under Vehicle Settings. Might tell you something.

I’ve had the car looked at and they couldn’t find a fault, but clearly something isn’t right. Also, take a look at the stop / start system status on the infotainment screen under Vehicle Settings. Might tell you something.

The OP didn't mention if the car is manual or DSG as Stop/Start works quite differently in each. With DSG the engine will stop if the brake is applied firmly when D is selected. It will restart when pressure is applied to the throttle (or, apparently if ACC detects the car in front moves). Releasing pressure on the brake will NOT start the engine as it's likely AutoHold will be on (if fitted).
If it a manual the engine will stop if neutral is selected AND the clutch is released. The engine will restart as soon as the clutch is depressed.
Both also rely on the engine being at a working temperature AND the battery being able to handle whatever accessories are operating.

As before, this isn't the case with all DSG cars. Mine restarts when the brake is lifted.silentbrown said:

It is a brand new car with next to no miles driven so far. No problem with battery, and car has been checked thoroughly by VW. Bizarre to me then that it’s behaving this way.

Depends entirely on whether you have Auto Hold engaged. With it on you can take your foot off the brake and the engine doesn't start until you press the throttle. With it off the engine will only stay off with your foot on the brakes, and the engine starts when you take your foot off. Guess Audi cars don't come with Auto Hold as standard.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
