Had an interesting reaction from a Jaguar XJ8 last night as I was driving home. Was plodding around some back roads when I saw this guy starting to examine the Type R badge on the back, it was late so I let it go.

Anyway head out onto a faster main road and I decide to wind the car up a bit. Nice cambered hill, no traffic so I whizz it up. Notice this Jag creeping up behind me, didn't pay much attention. The road narrows down to 1 lane and goes shows a no overtaking white stripe. I look over to my right and the Jag has decide to overtake and then cuts me up!! Utter, utter tit!!

He then proceeds to take his lard mobile as fast as he can round the upcoming round abouts and onto the motorway. Needless to say I was a bit peeved and decided to 'pursue' him (He was going home my way anyway - I wasn't stalking him!! )

His Jag was an XJ8 with a 4litre V8, lots of torque so I didn't stand a chance? So very wrong....

Let's just say I wasn't any faster then he was but I certainly wasn't any slower! He guns it and I'm staying with him 4th... 5th... 6th.. still with him, 7000rpm in 6th. He then decides to change lane and has to brake hard to avoid the slower traffic. I overtake and he must have felt gutted.... yes this is childish but the roads were completely empty, apart from the car he nearly rear ended, and I was very aware of everything around me and there was plenty of space to slow down again.

Anyway the main thing was I felt irritated that even a tit in a lard mobile like an XJ8 decided he had something to prove. Certainly a reminder that age is no reflection of maturity..

Here's another interpretation.

Interpretation 1.

Lard-arse in Jag. Notices you are not pressing on that hard. Decides to overtake. He's not a very good driver so choose a totally inappropriate place to do it.

Gets it so wrong he has to cut you up to get back onto the proper side of the road.

The total embarrassment of having messed up a simple manouver means he's so sheepish he doesn't want to be anywhere near you (since he guesses you may be rightly annoyed) and so (once again inappropriately) he attempts to out run you and fails.

Interpretation 2.

Jag owner decides to overtake. Opportunity is marginal. Shouldn't have done it really but goes for it. You are UNAWARE of the overtake until too late and may possibly have been accelerating slightly?

Jag owner cuts you up. In fear of how you may react attempts to get away.

I'm not saying either of the above is true...just that most times I've been cut up I've gone over the incident in my mine and thought hard about what caused it. Its rare that I can hold myself completely blameless....just food for thought that's all...

Don,

You are quite right and you've made a fair enough comment. I don't tend to take these kinds of things to heart to be honest, once he disappeared that was the end of that and I slowed down pretty pronto.

Scruff 7000rpm in 6th is quite fast enough... embarrasingly so in fact...

I think I can work this out - 6th = 4.785:1@7000 assuming 195/55R15: 140ish***

Just so long as MadCop isn't around.

***Engine rpm x tire circumference in inches x 60 minutes/hour divided by transmision gear x od gear x tranfercase gear x axle gear x 63360 inches/mile

Pikey posted a photo of his dash in his CTR coming back from Lemans. His rev counter was at about 7100rpm and the speedo was showing 150mph.
I guess it depends how much yield you build into his speedo accuracy.

And size of tyre and gear ratio. Am I sounding a bit anal now?

How fast please?

6th gear is 20mph/1000rpm so 140mph on the dot. The Civic rides on 17 inch wheels BTW.

Peak power is at 7400rpm which equates to 146mph, i'm not sure what the speedo would be reading at that speed - it does get inaccurate approaching these kinds of speeds.
