Hi all... I’m currently looking for an Alfa Spider. I like the 2007 on body style with the six headlight configuration. The 3.2 V6 engine appeals as this car is a toy only and for weekend use only so running costs are a low priority.

Simim here looking for advice on what to look out for on these cars. It’s a marque I know very little about somclueless would be about right.

Thanks ..

I bought a 2007 Spider just over a year ago. My requirements were different from yours - I wanted a semi-daily car rather than a weekend toy. The extra expenses of a 3.2 were not worth it to me, so I didn't consider them and bought a 2.2JTS.

I have (mostly) been very impressed with it. When I viewed the car (at a small local dealer) the roof wasn't closing properly. This was fixed before I bought it, but I had several problems with the roof in the next 6 months and I was getting very sick of it. Having said that, it was fixed properly during winter and it has been faultless this summer (and used many times).

Apart from the roof, mine has been pretty reliable. My window regulator snapped on the drivers side, so I replaced it - part was ~£200. Brake light switch started causing cruise control to disable itself - think it was a £10 part.

Apart from that, everything works. Mine has ~50k miles on it.

I think you need to be careful of corroding sub-frame although I must admit I've not checked mine.

Overall, I like mine a lot. My only complaints would be that a bit more power would be nice - but in reality I have faster cars if I really want to go quickly. The one thing I don't like is that they are FWD, and this bothers me more than I expected.

I love the styling - especially the interior and think they are really nice cars.

Although not a Spider my wife uses a 2008 3.2 Brera as her daily, consumption not an issue, seems to average 22 to 25 mpg. Now on around 130k. Chains were changed at service recommended interval. Had a coolant leak from a plastic elbow at rear of engine, then a tiny leak that took an age to track down which was a crack in the rear of the expansion tank. It's been pretty good, and it's well screwed together.
