Le £200 Megane Scenic cabanon.

Bought today from my sister and brother in law who have owned it for 6 months. It has been used by them as a stop gap car whilst their house sale was finalised.
House sold, money in their account, new Disco on the drive and 1 Megane Scenic surplus to requirements. I'll give you £200 for it I said cheekily, sold to you they said.
So what did i get for my £200? to be honest a pretty tidy piece of French motoring.
"006 Megane Scenic 2.0VVT with a good history and 3 months mot. It's fairly well equipped and drives really well, I have done a few miles in it now and it doesn't appear to have any knocks or rattles.
My plan is to drive it until mot time, put it through the test, if it passes I will keep it clean and tidy and drive it on. I have no plans to spend anything on it, if it breaks i will scrap it.

Fond of this series Scenic, had a 2004 1.9dci Dynamic when my twin girls came along , few things stopped working like the A\C, dash display(known issue) and the passenger window mechanism but overall it was great, comfy to drive and we still miss it 4 years on.
I'm sure this will keep running and running with a bit or regular maintenance. Enjoy!

Long term ownership will very much depend upon the mot outcome in late August, for now I am just using it. Having covered nearly 200 miles there are a few little things I can comment on. It has covered a relatively low 76000 miles and drives really well, tight and odd noise free which did surprise me for an old French car. The 2.0vvt engine is pretty sprightly if a little bit thirsty, the auto box although agricultural actually changes up and down really smoothly. The interior has cleaned up very well and is a comfortable place to be, aircon doesn't blow cold, doubt I will even bother with it, also the drivers electric window drops perfectly but you need to pull up on the switch and wiggle it to get the window to rise, replacement used and working switch bought for £11 from ebay is on it's way. There is also more storage bins then I have ever seen in a car. Bodywork is very tidy, down the side there is only on small trolley dent on the drivers side the passenger side is straight, the front has slight stone chipping and the rear bumper has small amounts of paint peel on each corner.
So not the most stylish of cars, some people might even call it embarrassing but for £200 u'm happy to drive it around for as long as it's financially viable to do so.

My parents currently have two, a 53 plate 1.9 DCi with 133k on the clock that I bought 10 years ago at 33K and an 08 1.5 DCi with 90k on the clock. The 53 plate was used as a mobile skip while they were renovating their house and is about to be scrapped but has been a brilliant car.
The phase ones suffer lots of electrical gremlins, (Dash, heater fan speed, key cards not recognised, steering column failure, electronic handbrake failure and window regulators) but the phase 2 cars are much better.
One thing I will say is check the drain holes under the windscreen scuttle. If these block up with crud (I guarantee they will be already), the scuttle fills with water which then leaks into the car. The first sign on this is when the underfloor storage bins have an inch of water in them and as there are lots of electrics under the floor it ruins the car.
I think they are fantastic value and you got a real bargain there.

A few weeks ago a work mate got his partner a newer car, had been looking for awhile for the right one to come along at the right price.
This replaced their 2001 Toyota Corolla they'd owned for about 10 years. The car was in perfect running order with no dents etc, not the usual ex taxi pile of poo, Tax and Mot, never missed a beat.
So replacement car sorted he took it to the scrappers and collected £165, couldn't be bothered with the hassle of selling it.
2 minutes after being paid the the yard picked it up with the grab and moved it on the pile with the rest of them, would likely have served someone for another 5 years no problem.

Very well designed, safe, practical excellent cars. Is it the same F4R engine as a clio 172/182 but without the Renaultsport tuned bits? I had one for around a year as a stop gap car for family/child/tip duties. I remember spending a whole weekend taking the dash apart for something, also replacing the crappy plastic clips for 3 of the electric windows I still have some spares somewhere. Mine was a diesel, everything went wrong apart from the engine, how did Renault get their engines right in this era when everyone else was having dpf, egr and swirl flap issues? Unfortunately even that met its demise when my wife was in labour, somewhere between Hinckley and Higham on Hill I launched it off a canal bridge and cracked the sump on re-entry, made it to the hospital though..

So update time. Saturday August 25th mot day. Took it to the garage for it's 8am appointment with the friendly mot man, to be honest not expecting anything other then a fail sheet. Well 45 minutes later I was on my way home, it had only bloody passed, not only had it passed it was virtually a clean bill of health, advisories for the 2 front tyres getting low on tread. I returned home a happy man.
As my requirements have recently changed the Megane was going to be sold on regardless of the mot outcome as either spares or repairs or a good runner with a years mot, fortunately it was the latter.
So advert written and a sale price agreed with the wife of £650. Now I know I only gave £200 for it but I felt at £650 someone would still be getting a good car for the money.
So about an hour later a email was received from a 20 something lad asking if he could come and view the Megane, a time was agreed for Sunday morning and true to his word he turned up on time. Half an hour later he had departed with the Megane, he had left me with £400 cash and a px.
So I give you the taken in px hasn't really cost me anything Vauxhall Vectra C facelift. It's a 2006 2.2 direct SRi Satnav model, it's mot'd till April next year and has done nearly 150k miles.
The lad had lost faith in it as it has a knocking coming from the front end and the o/s/f indicator will not work. From what I could gather someone possibly a friend of a friend had told him it was going to cost a lot of money to repair and was not worth doing.
Anyway Investigated the knock, strut top mount, ordered a pair including bearings for £38. The headlight issue involves the indicator bulb hole, the connection ring inside of the light appears to be broken as it is moving around. Ordered a second hand light from eBay for £26. Other then that i can see any other problems. It was absolutely filthy inside and out so a day spent cleaning and it now looks respectable.
Before and after, I forgot to take a before pic of the interior.
I don't really need it but as it effectively owes me nothing I have decided to keep it and use it through the winter.

The headunit, colour display, surround and GPS aerial go on ebay all day long for £100-150, so if the vectra fails a future MOT horribly, you can make back almost the PX difference in that bundle alone.
That's good to know. This car is a shed and once the minor repairs have been done I will give it a small service and run it as such.Paul S4 said:

Funny you should say that. Although I quite liked the Megane I always felt people were judging me whilst driving it, zero street cred. Now don't get me wrong, the Vectra is nothing special but people don't seem to judge it in the way they did the Megane.vsonix said:

I had no need for the Megane and I wasn't looking to replace it, this just fell into my lap. Ugly?? agreed, not the last word in style but I've seen worse. The colour??
