I was at Acton Town tube station the other day.

The signs for next trains said

1 - Heathrow T4
2 - somewhere else I cannot remember
3 - Heathrow 1 2 3 and 5

A lady came up to me and said how do you get to Terminal 3 so I told her to wait for the 3rd train as per the screen. I didn't have access to a map at that time.

However when the first train came it said 1 2 3 and 4 (I am aware 1 is closed but looks like the tube still refers to it). She asked whether she could get on it and I nervously said yes.

Looking at the tube map now I presume the T4 train goes to T4 and then loops back round to T 2 and 3 and then back to London.

The train for 1 2 3 and 5 goes to 2 and 3 first then 5 and then comes back.

So essentially 2 sets of trains go to 2 and 3 but only one for 4 and 5.

Which begs the question why doesn't the sign say 2 3 and 4 at the same time?

I think I'm right in saying it effectively terminates and then forms a new train at T4 and waits for about 8 minutes while it does so.

Thats correct.

Its a lot longer journey to go via T4 to get to T2/3.

Exactly. I've absently minded waited sitting on the train at T4 waiting for T2/3 whilst they empty it of empty crisp packets and discarded newspapers.

Today was slightly weird as they had broken something at Acton Town, trains were terminating at T2/3 which was a pain as we were trying to get to T5.
