Thought this might be of interest for some people. I drive past this ship every day on the way to work.

This happens surprisingly often - I wrote my dissertation partially about the whys and wherefores of it. The poor buggers haven't got enough money to pay for a flight home, and couldn't afford to lose their pay even if they did.

Arrange for mates to claim soon-to-be-derelict ship, abandon ship.

Quote from the newspaper article.
“If I were to get off the ship with everybody else the vessel is considered a derelict which means anybody can take it over,” the captain said.

So how does that work then?
If I moor my boat (if I had one) and go home at what point does it become 'Derelict' and up for grabs?

Thinking of grabbing that abandoned superyacht mentioned in another post.

Why don't they just claim it for themselves and sail it home then?

The need to pay several thousands in harbour dues and then buy several thousand pounds worth of fuel and several thousands worth of insurance I would suspect.....

Once the vessel runs up harbour dues equal to the vessels worth, it can then be auctioned off and the crew paid from the proceeds. I believe in this particular case there is complications with a bank involved. The same company had a vessel arrested in Aberdeen that was auctioned off for circa £650,000 and the crew received their wages as the harbour dues were reduced by the harbour authority.

This is one of the reasons why the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC2006) was introduced. All commercial vessels have to adhere to the MLC regulations which includes the requisite insurance cover to repatriate every crew member and pay two months salary. Notice of the insurance cover should be posted in the crew quarters as evidence of cover.
If the insurance is inadequate the 'Flag State' acting as the administration should ensure that the crew are repatriated to their declared port or port of hire.
