The mighty golf finally let me down yesterday, after 4 years of faithful driving with nothing other than routine servicing and consumables it gave up the ghost in the middle of a busy car park. As I pulled into a space in the car park the engine stalled, I tried to restart it and could hear the starter motor whirring but nothing at all from the engine as well as having no power steering or brakes. I rolled the car back out of the way and called the AA. The mechanic took some covers off and turned the engine over a few times and was fairly sure that the problem was with the timing and that the cam belt had slipped, but he found no faults on his code reader. I had the car recovered to the garage I use and I'm waiting to hear from them about what the problem is.

Has anyone on here had any similar sounding problems?

Not on a 2.0 but i once looked at a 1.9 pd that had jumped a tooth or two and it was the same. No codes logged and would not start.

How big a job is it to fix if its just a couple of teeth? The recovery mechanic didn't think it was too far out but couldn't be certain.

Normally due to a worn belt or lack of tension.

This is my fear, I was hardly moving when it went, just crawling into a space, would this help? Obviously the engine is still turning at about 2k RPM so probably not. Does it just depend which way "out" the timing has gone?

Doesnt really matter how fast you were going.

It the belt or tensioners have failed, the best you can hope for is that it hasnt smashed the valves into the pistons. Trying to start it wont have helped.

All you can do is wait until the mechanic has managed to have a look and give you the news. Anything else is guesswork.
