Went to see a preview of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" last night, thanks to free tickets from Real FM!! 
Great film, a condensed version of the BBC series really, a few new gags but it keeps true to the series story line at least (haven't read the book yet
)
Zooey Deschanel who plays Trillion/Trisha is
lurvly and Martin Freeman plays Arthur Dent very well (got 4th/5th billing in the opening credits though ?!?)
It's well worth seeing, two thumbs up!

Well that's MJ Simpsons personal view of the film, it seems to me that MJ would rather have had a film quoting Adams' original screen play verbatim. I for one would have had a numb @rse sitting through a film that would be 6+ hours long
I do agree about MJ's point about John Malkovich, a very weak performance.
"lots and lots of special effects" hmmmm, there were some but it wasn't overrun with them...
Condensing it to a decent length, yes you are going to loose a lot of the original gags but, for me, what was left appealed to my sense of humour.

There is always a problem when you have a film conversion of a book with lots of fanatical fans.
Can't wait to see it myself, I don't see the point in going into a movie purposely to compare it to it's previous incarnations be it book, radio or tv show, I just enjoy the film as I would any other.
The books rank among my all time favourites and I love douglas adam's very unique humour and characters, so i'm optimistic that i'll enjoy it, but if it's dissapointing then it won't be because it's not faithful to the book, but because it's a badly made film.

I went to see it last night and whilst as I knew vague details of the book, I've never read them.
It's much better than that review said. It's very British in that it appears to have low production value, and the use of British accents throughout put it rumbles along at a fair ole pace, there are plenty of jokes etc. Only one scene spoiled the whole thing and that was the one with John Malcovich - it's was a "whats the point" moment.
You'd definately get more from the film if you know the books inside out as at several stages the three of us couldn't understand for a second why half the cinema were roaring with laughter at something seemingly in the background. Oh, and don't for one second try to understand it - it's not memento for weird plot timeline, but's not far off.
A get it out of DVD if you're not massive fans IMO. Put it this way, I'd have been disappointed to pay full price.

Its my favourite book, ever, just about.
I have complex and intricate mental images of all the characters and he writes with such subtle comedy genius painting the gags red on screen seems to be an opportunity to ruin them unless done exceptionally well.
I just dont know, see what could be a great film or stick with the comedy mental images I have had since childhood.
