Postal votes (again)

Due to voting irregularities in last years local election (labour candidates implicated needless to say), Reading Council have carried out an audit.

The result?

6,000 names have been removed from the electoral roll - that's 1 in 25 votes where found after a quick sweep.

We're registered to postal vote. Anyone know how long before the election should we get the paperwork (ie ballot paper) through? Should we have had it by now?

6000 is a fair few! In our 4 person student flat for these elections we've had 8 polling cards: 2 for people that actually live here, 4 that lived here last year and another 2 we've never heard of. I've received one here and also one at home. With the possibility that polling cards could also have been sent to my previous student flat, it's easy to see where these extra votes come from. Maybe students are a problem because they move often and usually don't fill in the required forms but the system does seem a bit of a shambles.

Seems also there are problems with Postal Votes in Wales as the envelopes don't actually seal.

Some muppett Council sent out 15,000 postal votes but the numbers on the slip and the witness form didn't match.

So they'll have to do them all again. I'd recoup the wasted money from the culprit's salary, then maybe they'd pay attention the next time.
