I'm not exactly an expert or techie, but my Linux workstation uses LinNeighborhood and Samba to communicate with the internet-router and Windows-PCs.

As far, as I understand, Samba is for everything data exchange between Unix/Linux and Windows, and LinNeighborhood is a helpful tool to browse the network and mount shares to your Linux workstation.

another useful link

When you say share network connection, do you mean something like a cable modem or DSL connection, which gives you a single IP? If so, your best bet is to get something like a Netgear RP114 Broadband Router (www.computermarket.com/mall/3A82B013/DigiCams_UK_Online_Router_5500.html) , which will allow you to share your network connection between different machines. I believe there is SW around that will allow the Linux box to act as a router, but a separate router is going to be a lot more secure - if this is a big issue, then get one with a built in Firewall. For POP access, Netscape will allow you to access your mail from the Linux box, although your mail will then be stored on this machine rather than the PC.
