I’m looking at a 2012 BMW 320d and the guy is telling me all service history is stored digitally on the car and at BMW. Is that true? No more stamped books?

Thank you,

True. I'd still want to see some bills /receipts though (but that's just my lack of trust in used car sellers)

Thank you. I agree with you. The car has full BMW history, just serviced by BMW - but I was still expecting a service book of sorts. Although it is all displayed on the dash..

I couldn't work out if this electronic 'service book' only stored those services done by the manufacturer.

We buy our cars when they're out of warranty and rarely use main dealers, so I wondered how we'd fare going forwards...

Yes it's all stored via the iDrive now on BMWs no more paper service history. Invoices may not necessarily be available either as they'll generally get binned if the car passes through an auction or is sold by a dealer, due to data protection. However the challenge can be if it's serviced outside the BMW network some garages won't have the right equipment to update the iDrive history.

If you email GBCustomerSupport@bmwfin.com with the reg and VIN they can provide centre visit history and confirm whether the car has an active service pack.

The history on the iDrive is pretty easy to access and will look similar to the below:
