Best driving roads in Scotland???
Discussion
Hi all,
I've gone and got myself one of these 3 day test drives that Vauxhall are offering (in a VX220 turbo). Sounds like fun so I thought I'd turn it into an intensive driving / camping holiday around Scotland.
So, my question is what roads would you say are an absolute must during a 72hr Cannonball Run around Scotland in a VXT ???

I could be wrong (it was a while ago) but isn't this run a real belter ...
Rhiconich to Unapool on the B838 and B894 - I seem to remember awesome roads, fantastic scenery, and bugger all traffic.
In fact, and then run down to Ullapool on the A835.

Do This:
A82 From Glasgow, A83 from Tarbet, B8001 From Kennacraig. then stay here:

Then head up to Oban, then to Fort William, then to Mallaig. There are some great roads around the West Highlands, and with the current weather you'll have a great time!

Avoid the Perth - Aberdeen road. I think it is called the A90 - it is covered in speed cameras.
Of course, many oil industry executives like to give their new wagons a bit of a test run up this road, but I'm afraid the local folks who can't judge when is a good time to pull out into traffic have won out.
Spunky, (sad nick!). A87 Through Glen Shiel from Invergarry to Shiel Bridge (or on to Skye if you like, but best bit is as described).
Fabulous single carriage, 2 way road with beautiful scenery, some excellent sight lines for overtaking and of course very little traffic.
Laughed all the way from Fort William to Skye last summer, a road made for sports cars.
Hope you enjoy wherever you end up; whoever said the road back to England, well I think you'll find they aren't quite accurate on that. Make sure and post some photies.

As said before the A82 is a great road. Awesome scenery as well if you fancy stopping for a bite to eat!
Very far north is also good as there are no cameras to speak off and hardly any of anything nasty to cars really!
Enjoy!
That road provided me with the quickest speed I have ever been on the highway, an indicated 202mph, whatever genuine speed that was. (188 true mph, going by a gearing calculation).
It felt V E R Y fast, I can tell you.
It worked out as the same as covering the length of the Old Trafford football pitch every second !!!

Costs you £175 if you don't buy it, remember !
Really great response guys!! Thanks very much for all your inputs.
In return I promise a full report on what I thought of the car and I'll take loads of pics as well.
In total it's costing £175 for the 3 day drive + £100 fully comp insurance + petrol + camping. Not exactly cheap then but I'm sure it's going to be great fun.

You should use this road to get to Fettercairn, and then drive over the hill/mountain to Banchory. Best bit of road ever.
I've been on this one a few times.
I think it's single track, or am I wrong ?
Lots of roads round there seem to be single track.
If you are in Banchory, you probably already know
the road west to Braemar, and then the A93 south to Perth.
Goes over the highest public road in the UK in the area of the Glenshee ski area. Interesting drive

The FT William to Mallaig road is ace... just do it at the crack of dawn or you'll be following numpties and dodging manic fish lorries.
last time i did it i was up there for a 90th Birthday and at 5:30am me and pops jumped in the hired omega and thrashed it to mallaig and back. The old man was hanging on on the way back.
The poor omega had smoke pouring from the brakes and was tinkiling and creaking for ages in the car park after.
I think i actually prefered the road before all the eu money put in all the straight bits, but its much quicker than the first year i did it 1989ish
I favourite road though has to be the old icbm road from the sub base to loch lomond top tastic... cant remember the name though
