S3 Erratic Speedo

Pulled away from our TVRCC Scotland pub lunch meet yesterday (non alcohol offcourse for the drivers) onto the dual carriage way when her in doors comments that 40MPH on the dual carriage way was not too sensible, so get the boot down. So I stole a glance at the speedo and sure enough only 40MPH but I knew I was going a lot faster, just over 70MPH I reckoned being just over 3000RPM on the rev counter in fifth gear.
The speedo was erratic the rest of the trip home.
As there are to many fixed and the odd mobile cameras up here in sunny Aberdeen does anyone have any suggestions, does a 1992 S3 have a cable drive speedo or is it electronic, and the $100 question is it easy to fix?

Sorry mate, don't know alot about speedo problems, although I have to say that I would check the earthing points first!
Main reason for replying is that I live about 30 miles south of Aberdeen and have been looking to meet up with some local guys for a long time! Have tried to find out about the TVRCC meets, but they seem a bit vague, time and location wise....
Fancy meeting up for a drive sometime?

My speedo was reading erratically for ages, it would swing between say 30 and 80 when you were doing about 40. Or maybe 50. Could have been 60.
They are electronic, not cable driven, so pick up signals from the ECU, which in turn is fed by a gearbox sensor.
In my case, shortly afterwards, the main ignition connector at the switch burnt out, and the car came to a total halt. If you look under the steering cowl you'll see this connector with 3 wires to the ignition switch - take it apart and look for signs of burning on any of the connector terminals. I cut mine off and put in a new 4-way connector I bought from Halfords (I think it was meant to be an audio connector to be honest).
After the repair the speedo worked fine!
Otherwise it might be a duff earth - I haven't found the dash earth connections yet!

The north-east scotland group don't have fixed time / venues, that's the problem.
There is a group in Kirkcaldy on the first Saturday of the month, and a group in glasgow on the last Sunday.
