Oil cap 1.8t TT help

Hi all.

I have a MK1 TT 225 and I'm wondering if there will be any problems putting the oil filler cap directly on the engine (without the neck).

With the recent cold weather and my clumsyness I seem to have snapped parts of the Neck which connects the cap to engine. I think this part is more for practicality more than anything else?
