Its normally standard practice for a pilot of a tailwheel aircraft to opt for a grass landing over a tarmac landing. The grass is more forgiving if you land with a little yaw as it allows the wheels to skid a little sideways, and allows the control surfaces to control the direction of travel.A little yaw during landing and takeoff phases is inevitable on a tail dragger. Its not like most car drivers think, you can't simply line up, and give the throttle the beans, and expect it all to keep going in a straight line, and the same goes for landing too. That's why you see the rudder waving around seemingly randomly while a tail wheel aircraft is landing and taking off.
Either it was a dumb place to put a piece of equipment, or the pilot mistakenly landed on the wrong side of the runway. You would be surprised at how little you can see over the nose, maybe he just was unable to see it?
