Ok so had awesome fun on the track last week at Homestead even though I got overtaken buy everything as I have no idea how to drive.

Get to the 4 min mark when my instructor takes over proving is is not the car but the way it is driven

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfV8IzSiCfg&t=...

But now I want her street legal first thing would be a windscreen but also I will need a handbrake.

That said here is a couple of photos of the tunnel as it is now, I am not sure if it is a Caterham OEM or one that has been fabricated for the car.

My questions are:

1) if it is a Caterham piece what is the part number

2) If not, is there a Caterham replacement that will accept the installation of a handbrake

3) If not I was going to buy the trim that fits this tunnel and use it as a template to make a cutout and add a handbrake to the existing tunnel.

4) If I do go with option 3 what trim (part number) do I need to buy.

All things are possible but a conversion to a road legal spec might not be cheap. Lots of things may have been removed, or never fitted, horn, wipers, washers, etc etc. You will also need to check that the rear calipers are able to take a handbrake cable. Tunnel is just trim and can be replaced, but the handbrake mounts may not be there.

Ya thanks for the input
I guess I need to take it to someone who deals with this sort of project.

Thing is Caterhams this side of the pond are ridiculously expensive so if it is just too much work and expense I may end up trying to sell this as a track car and fund a road going one.
This one is in such good shape it is gonna be hard to let it go .

Welcome to the world of Caterham track days! Brilliant fun aren’t they ! Getting instruction is a great way to start. Can’t help you with conversion, but enjoy!

PS take a look at hand position between you and instructor. You will get more precision if you follow his lead at 1/4 to 1/4 past than traditional 10 to 10 past on road which will build your confidence. See how he hooks his thumbs over the wheel spoke. Only on really tight corners would you move them (it’s ok to cross hands :-))

For sure a handbrake
Windscreen wipers etc
I have everything else, horn, indicators, lights, (but no high beams) I believe I only have one wire to the headlights so that will need to be addressed
I think that just about it oh and the Hoosiers tyres will need to go.

It is murky as to how to go about registering this as no one at the DMV has heard of a Caterham.
I think trying to go the Kit Car route may be an option
My best bet is to find someone who builds cars (kit cars) for street use and see what they have to say

I am also toying with the idea of a rolling chassis from the UK but that is a whole other topic
By chance has anyone on the in the US and imported a Caterham?

If it's a MY2000 chassis it should have all the mountings for a tunnel handbrake beneath the tunnel cover, but you're best removing the cover to check. Caterham moved to a tunnel handbrake in 1996 but the race chassis had the under-dash handbrake for another couple of years.

It could be worth making contact with the California Caterham Club.

Are you sure it doesn’t have a handbrake under the dash? My 2002 race car has one fitted and I never knew it was there until someone pointed it out to me.

Didn't see one but then again never looked for a handbrake just assumed I did not have one I will take a look tonight.

On to that other choice of selling this one and buying a street legal car anyone have any info or advice on shipping in a rolling chassis or even a kit from scratch?
I just think this price is way to much here for a rolling chassis but then again after shipping costs from the UK this might be the way to go

I did reach out to the guys on the West Coast and waiting to be accepted so I will see what they say.
