I'm currently reorganising the relay/fuses board in the passenger foot well and I have a couple of questions. While I was hanging upside down with my head under the dashboard I noticed this part of the wiring loom which goes through the firewall in the top left hand corner of the foot well. It looks like the grommet around it has split and the loom might be chafing on the glassfibre. So my question is, does anyone know where this loom goes? It appears to go into the wing of the car, but under the wheel arch there is no access to that area and it doesn't seem to come out in the engine bay.

For some reason this photo is upside down. I've tried rotating it to correct it but it's still upside down.

There is a wooden board that the relays are supposed to be mounted to in the foot well. It appears to be held in place by two bolts. Does anyone know how these bolts are attached, are they captive nuts? I removed one bolt but it won't re-tighten. The other bolt just turns and won't come out.

TIA

I'm pretty sure that's the loom for the lights. Should exit in the n/s light pod recess. The bolts for the board hold the expansion tank in place on mine. They bolt through the tank brackets to the bulkhead with a nut and washer. The board fits over the remaining thread and is held in place with a nut.

There's no doubt that a wedge owner will solve this for you but......
Attempt to pull the loom out a little and check how bad the wires have been cut or rubbed away at, if the wires are damaged post back here for suggestions about repairing that damage, you should be able to remove that Grommet and cut the PVC tape off the area that has been rubbing so that you can check it over better.
Once all is good with the loom and ready to go back in the correct place, get hold of a close to finished roll of insulation tape as you will be able to tape the loom back up much easier with a small roll (a big roll of tapes weight hanging down makes life difficult plus the physical size of the roll gets in its own way), a trick of the trade if you haven't got a small roll of tape is to tightly wrap some tape around a small length of thin pipe or a nail from a full size roll so as to make a small roll of tape, now you can use your taped pipe/nail to tape around a loom that's in a difficult place or high up, warm up the tape on a radiator or with a hairdryer before you get taping as it will stretch better without tearing

Now get hold of a known correct size grommet and cut it halfway through to its hole, place the grommet around the loom and superglue it at the cut so that you now have a new intact Grommet

  • ***WARNING***** Be very carefull not to glue yourself to the grommet as nobody in the future will want to be buying a Wedge with a rotting body in the footwell

Thanks for the replies.

"Penelope", I'll check the wires condition over the next few days. There are some useful tips in your reply. Thanks for them.

Am400, I think my 400SE must be slightly different. The wooden board in mine has the bolts on the board side. I have loosened one but there is no sign of it going through to the engine compartment. The expansion tank is as solid as ever. I think they must have used a different method.
