Just bought myself a Mk6 GTI. It's a 2012 model but I will still be looking into the tension chain issues..

Regardless, I've been offered a 6-month warranty through the dealership (autoguard warranties) for £299. It made me think whether it was worth it so also looked at an official VW warranty which is coming out at £519.04 for the year.

I realise warranty is a bit of a gamble in itself, but can anyone help me make up my mind whether it's worth it?

I think the 12 month VW warranty looks much better value than £299 for a 6 month one.

I bought a Mk6 GTi at the end of last year (late 2011 car). Was approved used so came with a VW warranty. So far it’s paid out about £1k so I’ve been glad of it. £800 of that was a new air-con compressor (they’re not unknown for them failing I don’t believe). In both instances the work was diagnosed and fixed in a day - dealer was spot on.

My car was very well specced from new so has lots of electrical stuff with the potential to fail. List when new was £32k.

Thanks FunBus. I'm thinking on the same lines. I was initially going to get an approved VW for that reason, but in the end found one waaay cheaper - albeit with a higher risk.

Whilst they've quoted and happy to take my money, I can bet it won't be as easy should I have an issue. I've sent them an email to see if they can confirm whether a claim would be accepted considering it's a non-approved, CatD car with part service history... We'll see..

Cheers.

I wonder if a Cat D car with part history might put you on the back foot. However, I’ve never looked in to a manufacturer extended warranty on such a car.

I had the official extended warranty on my Leon TSI a few years back and it paid to have the timing chain replaced when that failed, and the turbo when it blew up a few months later. These engines seem quite problematic so it's a sensible investment as an insurance policy. However worth asking the question about Cat D/ Part service history having an impact...
