I don't like radicalism. I like using the following analogy to describe politics, apologies if it's a bit simplistic:
It's like a small boat with lots of people on it. The further people stand from the centre, the more severely the boat tips. If you have people standing on one side, it has to be balanced by an equal number of people standing on the other.
In short, radicalism from one source sinks the country and takes everyone with it. Radicalism from all sources creates stalemate as no-one dare compromise their position for another.
Boring the centre may be, but if you want the country to survive it's the best place to be.
One political phrase I hate with a passion is 'progressive'. It's meaningless outside of biased context. 'Progressive' suggests 'moving towards an ultimate goal'. So when a party says they're 'progressive', whose ultimate goal are they moving towards? There's no such thing as genuine 'progressiveness', in politics at least, the term is a sham.

The only interesting idea was expanding the numbers of children being monitored by social services-presumable taking into care those at risk-it would cost allot of money-but hopefully would reduce crime in the long term.

Usual suspects including what looked like an alien calling for cars too be taxed more heavily and travel to be rationed.
I should have expected nothing better from TV-A radical suggestion would have been to build more roads.

And I wouldn't have said privatisation was radical as it merely reverted back to the pre-nationalised system. Before 1945 everything was privatised.
It seems a perfectly natural now-but at the time it was seen as dangerously radical. If you are against radicalism you are saying that everything is perfect and nothing need change.
Oh and I made the right decision-Mystic River is a great film.
I'd say very little needs 'change', things just need 'massaging' to suit the times. Complete changes are too jarring and create instant opposition. Also, dramatic change often means you only find out about the little problems of your new system once it's in operation.
Some approaches need changing, but you've got to work with what you've already got or else you run the risk of leaving the population behind.

There were some good points made in the programme. Initially, I was unsure about the proposed "travel points" system, whereby one is allocated a set distance one can travel each month (with more polluting forms of transport eating up more points, eg planes), but it could have some merit. At the end of the day, though, if the government wants people out of their cars and onto public transport they need to radically improve the quality of it. I did agree with the point that the cost of air travel should go up, ie that the tax breaks the airline industry currently enjoys should be removed and that they should probably be taxed more. (Aircraft are especially bad for the environment because they release pollution into the most sensitive part of the atmosphere.) I appreciate that this would in large part have to be a global endeavour, although there are still things that the UK could do.

I agree that airline fuel should be taxed at the same rate as Petrol-after all it is just as polluting if not more so as it is released in the upper atmosphere. This would probable have to be a joint American/EU agreement.
But I do not agree with ration based approach to travel-it simply shows the driving force behind the anti car protesters-the old socialist urge for control.
