Hi

In recent weeks, the Golf R’s Windows are clear for the first 10m of the day. Following that they mist/fog up by themselves. I then put full windscreen demist and that works but struggles to clear side windows. Once clear, if I put into normal Auto mode it (front screen and side windows) mists up again after a few mins. Tried putting recirc on to see if it makes a difference (it doesn’t). Pollen filter was dry when I checked it a month or so ago.

Annoying, is this common as air con doesn’t activate under certain temps?

Note that here is no water in car, no wet carpets and VW have checked car out and said no faults, no water leaks etc. so is considered normal.

Anyone else any thoughts, solutions or is this normal?

You could try running basic settings with VCDS which will run all the flap motors through their full range of motion. This will often highlight a problem that might not have been reflected by an existing fault code. My S8 had a faulty fresh air flap motor, but no logged fault until I ran basic settings. Takes 30 seconds or so to run through and there's instructions on the Ross-tech wiki page.

If the car isn't getting damp and there's no blockage to the fresh air vents there's no reason for it to fog up, unless the air-con isn't functioning, which you'd expect to log a fault? Air-con, as you say, tends to not function when it's really cold so it may just be down to how damp the occupants are when they get in the car.

Thanks. Mostly just me in the car and I’m dry.

How do so test flaps? I do not have vag com or anything like that.

Would VW not have run this as part of their checks?

With VCDS you do the following:

[Select]
[08 - Auto HVAC]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The basic setting takes approximately 40 seconds.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Dealers don't have VCDS and their own equipment has different functionality. The basic settings function will be there, but they are probably only instructed to use it when they've replaced a known faulty flap motor.

A good indy can do this, or local VAG folk on forums. I'm near Gatwick and have it - loads of other users dotted around the country.

There are possible physical issues with the structure that might point to a possible issue e.g. windscreen leak, but I'd expect to see some evidence of moisture.

Have the pollen/cabin filter(s) been changed? I've had this on other cars where the filters are blocked causing condensation on the windows.

My R did this last year once but is was a very wet day with 4 wet adults and wet clothing in the car redfacehehe

I have played around with the recirc button (and settings for auto recirc) but makes little, if any, difference. 99% if the time it’s off anyway.

I’ll re-check the filter that lives behind the glove box. Is there another au need to check?

I assume checked by VW yesterday though as part of their investigations.

The cabin filter isn't always replaced at a service - it's an 'advisory' item, which I usually change myself, but the 2nd annual service on our mk7 GTI PP they included it in the quoted cost.

I'm about a mile from Pease Pottage services on the M23 if you get down this way - happy to run a scan and try basic settings to see if it throws up an issue.

One option is to head in to the climate menu and check that the fans are set to the most aggressive settings in winter - there are 3 modes and I think the default is the quiet mode.

Thanks. I will try the fan thing.

I will also see if so can tell of the recirc flap is operating, firstly by ear then by taking out pollen filter and seeing if I can see it.

Otherwise I’ll make the trip up to PP!

Just be aware that on VAG cars the air con is disabled at ambient temps lower than 5 degrees so makes the car more prone to steaming up at colder temps.

Normally the air con dries the cabin air and prevents the car steaming up.

Bit of an update. Took pollen filter out and could see, what I believe to be, the recirc flap. Despite going through all the climate controls this remained shut. I managed to squeeze my hand through gap to open the flap (needed a bit of a push to open, slight crack sound which may be the plastic cog wheel). Anyway, controls still don’t open or shut it, however at least it’s open rather than in recirc mode. If motor is not working, it better stuck in open rather than closed mode!

A 10/15m drive and no fogging so far. Will see tomorrow (longer drive)if still better and if all OK then that would point to the cause.

UPDATE!

VW, under warranty, fixed this by replacing faulty recirc flap motor. Had to take half dash apart so needed car over 2 days. Flap wasn’t opening or shutting and was stuck closed hence all the misting.

So, all good! Just in time for cold weather too!

Shouldn't that have shown up when they "checked" the car?

I bet it did, but they didn't want the hassle.
