On my way home from work yesterday night I drove behind an old style mini decorated with a few interesting slogans against the new BMW made Mini:

"100% no BMW parts"

"BMW - arrogance comes as standard"

Made me smile.

I had a go in a new mini (sorry MINI) cooper S at the weekend. Excellent little car, we were really chucking it into bends, the DSC light never came on once. I'd say point to point on reasonably twisty stuff these cars are quick and a lot of fun.
The build quality and materials were a bit crap though, but the design seems good.

He's waiting for a conversion to take it over 200bhp!

I feel I can speak with a little authority here as I have both (well the new Cooper is Mrs Dans').

Both cars are great, but at the end of the day the New MINI is 40 years more advanced and it shows it. The build quality is fine in my experience, it handles like a dream and it has all the mod-cons we have come to expect from our daily drivers. Sure the old car has more 'Character' but when I want that I drive the Griff.

Re the stickers in the old Min' We have had a couple of negative comments from old mini drivers, in much the same way the 'Air-cooled Nazis' bitch about the new beetle, but more often than not you get a friendly wave.

It's probably one of the parts that Ford (well the Land Rover / Rover division) make for the car (I kid you not)... hence, therefore it's probably defective.

Maybe that bit's due for recall... like the gearbox, or the fuel tank, or...

At least the new MINI looks nice - the new bettle is one of the ugliest cars on the road. There are plenty of ugly and dull cars from Deawoo, proton etc, but at least they're fairley unnoticable - the new beetle isn't. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it can't be just me that thinks they're an abomination.

The new one is a good looking car but it not mini in any way whatsoever.
As long as all realise it's a BMW 1 series and not a Mini the better.
Cheers..... Andrew

There are lots of abusive old Mini drivers out there who will moan and flip the bird at new MINIs. I guess people are just bitter about it going to Germany - if it had been made at Longbridge by MG Rover then they would probably all love it.

Have you seen a new MINI parked next to a "real" Mini?? The new one is definitely not "mini"...

Who was it that stuck a Nazi flag on the roof of one in photoshop?

Bodo?

Think it was the most "anti-PC" car thread...?

It's made at Cowley, design at Gaydon I believe, Alec Issigoness (sp) was Greek anyway. I have 6 old minis (yeah I know) and I love the new car, my girlfriend is selling her old mini and getting one, it’s on order and should get it around January time. I went to john coopers over the weekend and got taken out in a clubsport car and saw a Cooper S works in the making.

Exactly, the old mini was revolutionary because of the space inside was good compared with it's overall size due to clever packaging - the new ones like an outside-in mini being bigger on the outside than the inside.

We saw one next to an Espace the other day, the Range Rover towered over it, made it look small!

Here bloody here!

There is no way on earth that this abomination is a Mini. Issigonis would be turning in his grave.

Nooooo!
That stuff is not to my taste!
I'm not bothered when someone else does it, but it's also not the most sophisticated humor.

That could mean, that Germans generally like the new MINI then?
IMHO it's similar to Britain: German "mini"-drivers/fans dislike the MINI, too. They call it BMW 2'

On my point of view:
I've tested the MINI Cooper S, and I must say, that I was a bit bored, compared to an SPi Cooper. Yes, it was faster, but "Freude am Fahren" is not on a straight road, and it has nothing from that BritVehicle impression

Cheers,
Bodo

isn't the main difference that the new mini doesn't require a marigold stuck on the dizzy to get it going in the wet?

memories of spluttering to a halt in the rain are flooding back.. i think they may have rustproofed the new one too.

drove the new one when it first came out - good fun, but nothing like the original (in terms of raw feedback) i thought. oh for a "delete" power steering option.... looks like i'll have to get an elise

Oh for god's sake don't remind me!
My little fred's still sitting outside, rotting quietly into the gravel.

She has a proper red acid proof glove on her dizzy, nothing but the best for my freddie girl...and a red-bull can over her gold-coil, way cool!

But when the little ends have gotta go the little end have gotta go.

She'll run again, then she WON'T be quiet!

Minis never die , they just get faster...eventually.

Mouse.

p.s. If you've read the (BMW)Mini Cooper 'S' review string, you'll know how I feel about that...

By the way people are talking here we should all still be driving around in Ford Anglias and for TVR Vixens , of cource the New MINI is biger its a modern car look at how all cars have grown over the years , and a new interpretation of a classic is always going to have a hard time , but this

"oh its German so it can not be a real mini"

stuff just will not work .

The original was brilliant for the time and lasted in production way longer than anyone expected it to but the new MINI is (i think) a great little car and will be an entertaining car, more power to BMW for trying

I still like it, I’m not sure how the others at the mini club will feel when we start turning up in it but that’s their problem really, plus I can take the Griff (hopefully) sometimes as well!

You see a lot on the roads so people must like them as they aren’t the cheapest small hatch.
