So, I have a problem with the OEM battery on my OPC warrantied 997 GTS. So I wrote an email to find out how much a OEM battery costs.

Answer

£322 for fitting and "coding"...
£227 for OEM Moll battery

OK. The battery is a rip off already?, I know that. But £322 for fitting? Coding the car?

I can't believe it...

Wow!

£227 for a crappy MOLL battery is insult enough (Bosch 5yr warranty battery approx. £140) but £322 for fitting (less than 30 minute job) and 'coding' is a complete rip off!

That's why I fitted a Bosch on my 997 GTS. If you insist on renewing the Porsche warranty when current policy expires just buy a battery from the dealer and fit it yourself.

They've named their (utterly insane) price. Hence the name: Stealers.

Now use EU Block-exemption laws (https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/service-repair/right-to-repair-campaign) and get it done for about 1/4 of the price somewhere else and - as long as they use OEM parts and procedures - your warranty should be unaffected.

You can't use that ruling for a non-factory warranty, such as the extended Porsche warranty. Either play by their rules or don't play at all!

All these stories are certainly supporting my decision not to bother with the extended warranty on my car next year...

I think they use Banner now, I have 3 MOLLS in the side passage, they are st thing's I need to take them down the tip at some point.

Just buy a Banner and swap it yourself no one will be any the wiser.

Sounds like it is time for a follow up phone call to the OPC and ask if there is a discount / reduction to be had.
If not, or not enough discount then I would DIY. Pretty sure the coding is OPC waffle and I'm sure YouTube / Google are your friend if you are unsure or not that tasty with a spanner.

Thats staggering.

I fitted a brand new Bosch S5 battery to my 997 last year and that cost me £99 including delivery. Fitting was 10mins work for me and no coding was done.

Of course, its not warranty "friendly".

Got them down to 205 in vat for the battery. Picked up and fitted it myself. Coding is reprogramming the windows, took 30s....

If the proceedure is in the manual (which it is), then I assume you're allowed to do it yourself.

Unfortunately the battery was covered in the acid they filled it with so I ruined my jacket carrying it...

Car is perfect now, windows wind better. Hopefully the rear screen defrost will finally work too

That is is just taking the piss.

I had the battery changed on my 6 year old 997.2, the moll battery was around £220 and then half an hour labour to give a £300 bill.

Thanks for that; only found that out today on another thread. I agree with your conclusion whole-heartedly.

Do you know how they gave it its first charge? I ask because I collected a brand new one which had been filled with acid at the OPC and charged in the parts department with a CTEK! Needless to say, it failed after a few weeks. I took it back and they gave me a new one, this time one which had been charged overnight in the workshop on the industrial charger. This is really important to their longevity, because, as others have said, the OEM battery is ste.

They said they would charge it for 2 hours on their machine, it was fully charged in that time... Presumably an industrial one
