Why do you listen?
Discussion
It has only recently occurred to me that I find it difficult to enjoy new music. I don't mean contemporary necessarily, but music that is new or unfamiliar to me. I think a massive part of the enjoyment for me are the memories certain bands/track/genres conjure up, and that the memories are far more important to me than the appreciation of the artistry or talent of the band.
Anyone else feel like this or is it just that I am not a very 'musical' person?

If it's memory/feeling related then given time the stuff you don't "gel" with at the moment becomes memories in the years ahead.
Prime example for me.....Ed Sheeran.....Not a fan of his, though the lad's done good, but my 10 y/o daughter adores him so it's played when she's in the car with me. So now whenever I hear "Castle on the Hill" I smile because it reminds me of her.
My own choices are more Floyd/Rush types of music.

Music is hugely important to me but even I get jaded sometimes with what I hear day-to-day, sometimes downright offended as in the case of Craig David feat. Bastille feat. Joseph Merrick playing on Radio 2 on the drive to / from work every day.
The solution for me was Spotify... all the music in the world, conveniently partitioned into playlists, but also with the capability to try new stuff which is suggested for me and my profile. I find exciting and often enduring new music regularly, a song or two a week. Those songs get saved in a playlist. You can then explore the artist and find out whether you like their other stuff. If most of an album is good, I'll buy it on vinyl but at the very least I have all the music I could ever want, regular new stuff to listen to if I want and a means of convenient storage / categorisation.

I often think about this. I have a load of music from different generas (sp?) that I love. When I listen to them they just take me back to the times I listened to them and how I felt. E.g. Lady Antibellum, "Back when you were mine." even though its not a particularly happy song, it takes me back to when I was heading for Donegal in the Mk1 Shogun, Kayak on the roof, sun shining and I just felt free and like life couldn't go any better.
I actually listen to a lot of classical music which I enjoy because I think I can take you to a place or almost tells a story. I find Country music to be like this as well. Can't say I care too much for main stream rubbish that's playing on the radio these days. (Since late 2000's)
