I'm 39 in a few months, and STILL I am getting bloody spots on my chin at random times. Always my chin, and they're never just small, they look like red, raw, cancerous growths on the face. Horrid. And I've been trying for years to get rid, they do often go away for a while, but then come back with a vengeance.

It probably doesn't sound like a big deal, but it honestly makes me so self conscious and often the spots can take weeks or even months to fade.

So, I am up for any ideas from anyone who has been up against the same problems and has somehow managed to get a handle on it.

You have my sympathy, I've struggled with this since my teens, I'm 45 in March! I'm getting good results with prescription Lymecyclene combined with using Acnecide cream (Benzoyl Peroxide.. Oxytetracyclene used to keep it at bay, but my body becomes immune to it.. I've got a place in Spain which I visit often, and the sun is a miracle cure.. I had a referral to see a dermatologist a year ago who recommended U/V light treatment, but it wasn't practical with my work etc.. Go and see a GP though, don't bother with any of the over the counter stuff, and forget about what you eat etc.. If you've got bad skin, you've got bad skin! I keep a good diet of lots of fruit and veg, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, don't over indulge - except a bit of wine at a weekend.. It makes no difference .. Your skin is a living thing, some have it good, others get it bad.. But I do understand how miserable it can make you feel.. I had a two weeks in Spain over Christmas and my skin was clear, without medication - I'm thinking of moving there lol!

Don't know if you can still get it as it has some side effects but Roaccutane fixed both mine and my sister's- we had horrendous adult acne until well into our 30s.

Used to be available only from a dermatologist.

Activ ingredient was same as in all that crap "look younger" stuff they sell to women but at a proper strength where it actually worked

Roaccutane it would appear is a bit of a last resort, from conversations I've had with GPs and Dermatologists down the years - because of its side- effects.. You need to ascertain what the issue is as it can also be foliculitis.. I get this on my chest and back, but rosecae (acne) tends to be more on the face..

Roaccutane is pretty grim. I used it for about a year when I was 17. Cleared up my acne, but spent a year with constant nose bleeds and constantly dry and cracking lips. It also has a huge list of potential side effects, and can cause birth defects so women have to agree to use two forms of birth control if they are on it.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure I really want to be on medication for a few admittedly fairly minging, isolated blemishes. I don’t get full blown acne, fortunately, I only seem to get them on my chin.

Really, I was wanting something more along the lines of lotions I can put on to stop them getting too bad. I know it can’t easily be cured (or at all). I’m starting to think along the lines of salicylic acid based face wash, a benzoyl peroxide cream for when I can feel them form, and maybe if there’s something that could get rid of the red marks that appear for a long time after, that would probably do me.

Benzoyl Peroxide cream is excellent.. I only discovered it a couple of years ago out of desperation.. It's good for both prevention and treatment, but get the correct strength - to high and it can burn.. GPs are good to a certain extent, but Dermatologists have a much better understanding, I'm sure that's why I've been steered away from Roaccutane.

Try tea tree gel. Use it every night as a preventative measure rather than waiting for spots to appear. Works well for me.

I agree about Roaccutane. In my case it absolutely was a last resort, severe acne for 20 odd years causing major scaring and severe pain.

I didn't have the worst side effects luckily and it basically worked so I've been more or less acne free since but wouldnt use it if it's only for a few spots

What face products are you using? I switched to an oil free moisturiser and it worked. I use Tom ford which is v expensive!

Don’t use any products, face gets washed in the shower each morning with warm (not hot) water. I’ve been using Tea Tree oil to treat the spots, but its not working.

Modern blades giving stupidly close shaves are not good imho

I get some spots around the back of my neck / shoulders / back, what gets to me the most is how one spot can make the muscle underneath lock up in a huge knot.

Anyway, some spots have responded well to this stuff - yes, the packaging is very Chinese, and they do look funny, but over night they have been known to pull gunk out from the spot.

Nope, I don't. In fact, I barely have to shave at all. Probably about once a week with a set of beard trimmers.

Sounds similar to me, Just odd ones around my mouth/nose. I have had some success with cerave foaming facial cleanser and moisturiser. The cleanser is easy to find but I have had to start buying the moisturiser from the US.
I used to use Benzoyl peroxide but found it a little to aggressive for me and ended up with some rather dry/sensitive skin.

Tried looking at your diet? After coming up against brick walls in the NHS we worked out my O/H can’t cope with gluten. He had other issues too but has always struggled with acne, really seriously bad pustules and spots etc. Took gluten out of our diet and they’ve quite literally disappeared and his skin is a whole lot better.
