I've got a set, they are great irons. I'm not selling them though...........

Would recommend that you try them / other makes in conjunction with a Pro, to see which type of shaft & lie suits you best. Ping offer a fitting service which also makes a big difference.

Good luck

The great thing about the clubs you've chosen are that they can be fitted to your stance, address, swing and preferences. It means that the clubs you buy are completely tailored to your game. And if you get better and your swing changes you can go back to the fitter and have them changed (for a price).

So - great clubs, great product.

If you are looking at Ping's I'd suggest you have a look at Callaways too - they might be a more forgiving club for you (at your current handicap).

What clubs do you use at the moment?

I'd suggest you have another 5 lessons (or 10 if you haven't had any) before you splash out. It's important to make sure you are gripping the club correctly and your swing is on it's way to being correct. This way you can make sure the clubs you buy are tailored to a correct grip and swing rather than your current (potentially) incorrect set up.

I play off 11 and only now am I thinking about changing my clubs (that I've had since I was a 24 handicap).

Putting is the key to lowering your particular handicap at the moment I'd suggest.

Just some thoughts and suggestions.

Do you get a loan set while they're in for service?

Is it true that the quoted performance figures are a little "optimistic"?

Main dealer or Independent?

It's difficult to say because the lie of the clubs can make a big difference to 'length' of the club.

For example some people have a 7 iron that has the angle of a 'normal' 5 iron so it's difficult to say whether things are optimistic. Hence all their clubs are longer than the given 'normal' figures for each club. If that makes any sense.

Great advice Oi Oi, I probably do need a couple of lessons with a Pro, I often think I could use a change in my swing, Too eratic and fast I think which of course equates to a non consistent ball control, I play with a set of Wilsons which I have had for WAY to long and now that I have a little money I'd like to spoil myself with a good set of clubs (suggestions all greatly appreciated) and PING were in my "simple opinion" the best?? , I have 1, 3 and 5 "Big Betha's" which I love!

If you are going to get a second hand set of Pings then check the shafts. I have the ISI irons and I'm on the 4th set of shafts in 5 years. Every iron has gone rusty. The guy in American golf said that they look like 8 or 9 year old shafts. Credit to Ping though as they change them and regrip them free of charge. I'm looking at a set of Mizuno blades or the new Nike irons. Just make sure you have an hour or two in the practice net with a pro.

I've heard some good reports about Mizuno clubs .... Helluva choice out there though, makes it difficult to choose and you have to admit one thing, its all about the name too, we all buy things because of Branding and "Ego". Well I speak for myself anyway!

Mizuno make very good blades. Always have done. Their 'flow' technology really does make a difference to the way their cavity back and muscle backs perform too. Worth considering are RAM FX Nickel Tour's (as used by Nick Price) - very forgiving blades and Maxfli's Australian Blades.

Blades are only really worth purchasing if you a able to 'work' the ball (fades, draws etc etc) - and the feel they give allows you to do this more easily than if you are using cavity/muscle backs apparently.

Otherwise I'd test run anything by Callaway - if you are looking for 'confidence' behind the ball then these might help - especially with the longer irons. If you aren't then I'd suggest you go for cavity backs and forego the longer irons and use a 5 and 7 wood for those longer fairway shots.

Taylor Made, Pings, Srixon, Wilson (deep reds), the list goes on.

Thats so bad it made me smile

I use Mizunos and think they are great. The only trouble is that they are graphite shafts and for a harder swinger (like myself) they arent ideal.

Still its all good fun - I'd rather be out having a bash about today than being bombarded with tales of misery.

I've got Mizunos, they're great. Can be customised too (so can most to be honest)

Lessons are well worth getting. A retailer once tried to tell me that I really needed to get different clubs, effectively to cover up some wee flaws in my swing. Stunned silence and embarrassed laughter when I asked if I might do better in the long run spending £500 on lessons and practice and keeping my nice clubs.

Basically you can try to buy scores by spending money on equipment to cover up your flaws, or you can learn to play properly.

Richard, why don't you book an appointment at Titleist as they are only up/down the road to you in St.Ives and you can be measured up with no obligation to buy. I did it 2 years ago and would highly recommend it, no pressure selling, just helpful informative staff with some fascinating kit like their launch monitors

go to a local club pro , get a lesson { had lessons meself but enden up with a big hook, so when back to playing with a fade} during the lesson tell the pro that you are planning to change clubs and what does he/ she recommend for your swing type .
Me m8 did this and then the pro gave him a loan of a few different clubs to try.
May also be better to wait till march time as if you buy now you wont get used to them. Wait for the new season as some different clubs may come on the market.

Happy swinging
