Hi chaps,
Advice needed, had my 997 Turbo for ten years and absolutely love it but retirement means I can’t really afford to keep it . Looking at Golf GTI or type r to take me up to motoring retirement frown

If you can hack the practicality (or lack of) then it’s got to be a Clubsport S.

Go with an R - Lovely easy going nature most of the time, bit of a beast when you want it to be.

GTi is a bit 'shouty' for my tastes.

Neither are likely to compare to a 997 Turbo though! smile

Have you considered the M140i? Probably a nicer car to drive day to day, and there's some amazing deals on them right now. Or what about a Cayman? Pretty practical still, but you get to enjoy Porsche ownership still, can't imagine it costs anymore to run that a Golf R/GTI.

Oddly the only snobbery I've seen is about leased German metal! wink

OP, as a matter of interest, what aspect of 997 Turbo ownership is becoming expensive - I presume you own the car, so I guess running costs/insurance?

I just wondered how bad they were as I usually find even the most extreme of exotica comes up pretty cheap for me to insure on the Meerkats! (I used to do web analytics for comparison sites, so I'd try out all sorts of stuff in my testing!)

Sad to see you getting rid of the car Lord, it’s such an amazing looking thing in speed yellow and always brightens up any thread in which it’s pictured.

Yes, I too would be interested to understand what element of the ownership is becoming expensive. As an outsider viewing this thread my thoughts have been that even if insurance, tyres and maintanence is an extra 2k per year over some of the discussed cars on this thread, some shinny new metal could be debrecisting that alone per year, and from what I understand your Porsche is flat on depreciation. If anything it could be going up!

So Man Maths maybe, but I really can’t see a new ish GTI, R or 140i will actually save you any money over another 36months. My thought is that you should hang onto (enjoy) it for another few years, then head for something a little more conservative.

Unless of course there are other factors to consider. Like the wife’s opinion. No logic applies there 😆

The expenses are need to run another run about so that creates double insurance mot s road tax ( the £500+ road tax on the pork is a bit on the heavy side). The other costs are maintenance, a ten year old car requires proper looking after which I have done and don’t want to stop that. On the wife matter, my dear wife says I should not sell the car as it’s not depreciating, and she loves me biggrin

My mate has the Golf GTi and it's a lovely thing. The biggest problem for me is that I have an M135i and as nice as the Golf is, it just feels pretty slow. I'd hate to think how slow it would feel after coming from a 911 turbo.
