Thought....If they actually gave the police funds to catch muggers/abducters/perverts, I would be more likely to let my kid walk to school! A bit of a way out view there but I''m sure many people have this fear and improving public transport will not make much difference to people who think like the above. If I drive my daughter to school I know that she is there, safe, not run over outside the school by mothers in 4x4''s flying past at 40mph putting their make-up on or such like. Giving kids cycle routes doesn''t stop the 18 year old tw@t showing off outside the school to 16 year old girls, 20mph speed limits and cameras would, imagine the extra security of having CCTV in the local area like they do in town centres, if there was any trouble it could all be reviewed and purpretrators caught. In my opinion money would be better spent this way than trying to upgrade a 1950''s public transport system! Anyway at this time of year my daughter loves being dropped off outside in the TVR - funny she seems to be the most popular child in school since we got it!!

I thing the americans have the right idea by having school busses. Public transport is like it says PUBLIC so any old weido can use it so parents probably dont feel safe letting their little darlings use it on their own. Paul

The ironic thing is that the fear of the danger on the roads is caused by the increased traffic which is of course partly/largely caused by the same people who fear it.

School buses yes, public transport no, when the kids are off school it halves the time taken to get into Cambridge, at all other times the roads are clogged by 4X4's etc for the school run. I can't think of a more wasteful exercise

Well, in Billericay the Police are implementing a nice road safety campaign.. Speed Camera Hidden behind a car parked in a Bus Stop, about 100 yards from a school. Shame it was last Sunday...

Same here apache. 1 road in and out of our town, 20mins+ term time, 5-10mins during the holidays. And another thing, the traffic queue I sit in is probably 30% workers, 30% School run people and 40% OAP's going to the bleeding supermarket.... HELLO they are open all day fogies!!!!! Please, please, please you don't need to go in rush hour, and guess what THE BREAD IS BAKED ALL DAY LONG IN THE 21st CENTURY SO IT WILL ALWAYS BE FRESH!!!!!!!

Why don't "they" provide better pick-up / drop off areas to make using a car to get the kids to school a quicker process. It'd fix the congestion problem by putting the congestion into a special "low speed" area (how about a 10mph speed limit?) instead of in the sodding road where I have to put up with it.
