My Mk7 GTI is slightly over 3 years old and like some others, appears to suffer for abnormally high corrosion on the rear discs (combination of not using them hard enough, and leaving the discs damp after washing presumably). The corrosion is too far gone to clear off, and it has accelerated the wear of the pads, so I now definitely need a new set of pads too.

Local VW dealer (Perth - who are friendly but not overly impressive on previous work) quoted £249 for rear discs and pads which seems fair for a main dealer price.

They are convenient, but can anyone give me any price they have paid for comparison, and/or recommendation for a decent Central Scotland (I live in Perthshire within 1hr of Glasgow and Edinburgh) VAG specialist. Even if this does not really need a VAG specialist, it might do no harm to build up with a relationship with one now, for future servicing work now that I am out of warranty.

Thanks

The standard discs and pads are very good for OEM on the MK7 platform. Perhaps you could sign up to VW's brakes for life program.

As for the corrosion, rear brakes don't get as hot as the front so corrosion is always and issue. I just blast my new discs with zinc spray from ebay and they stay fresh looking for years.

Ask VW about the Clubsport S rear upgrade, it uses same discs but pads are different.

You could also buy the parts from TPS and get an indie to do the work.

Not an independent, but Western VW have GTi world as part of their business and they specialise in performance VAG stuff. Dean and Hamish are the lads there and they’re spot on.

Thanks all. Some interesting points in there. I hadn't heard of the brakes for life thing - will need to find out if they still offer it, as I can't find anything on the website.

Funnily enough the car was sold by Dean at GTI World (and my previous Scirocco was from Western too).

Anyone used Autohaus in Bilston? They seem to have a reasonable reputation?

Update for anyone else interested: got it done at Autohaus in Bilston by Penicuik. About £70 cheaper than VW and still a decent make of pads etc.

None of the shiny dealership goodies but I had a cuppa round the corner at my mate's house, and some meatballs in Ikea instead. smile

Thread resurrection!

Noticed that I am getting a lip on my 3 month old rear discs already, and the hub carriers (which I repainted silver 6 months ago) have gone completely black. Doesn't seem like brake dust as it doesn't seem to rub off. Could be from excess lube on the pad retaining pin or something?

For comparison, I have no lip on my front discs (still original discs and pads), and the front hub carriers are still looking quite tidy. All four hubs were painted at roughly the same time (before new rear discs and pads).

I've emailed the VW specialist who fitted them for his comments. Am I just being a fussy bugger, or is a lip after a few thousand miles and completely black hubs unusual?

Something not right there, did they change pads at same time as the discs? I have a 64 plate GTI, im about to order rear discs and pads to do myself, does anyone recommend any, or confirm who makes the oem supplied ones?

Yes, new pads and discs. I'll hang fire on a recommendation until I work out what the issue is here. These were from a reasonably big name brake pad company. Brake feel has felt fine.
